I suspect you are exaggerating at being tracked at 5000’?
They can get you on MAD at 1000’ (iirc) if they are right over you, or a slant range of 1000’ if not. If you are moving then (just like when you solve a target) it is easier for them to get a solution on you. Especially if there are two of them.
Is it cheating? It feels like it. But in one sense it’s a realistic challenge. The only aspect that is arguable is the degree to which the MAD is effective to detect and localise you. The game possibly overstates the effectiveness of MAD. But then the real world effectiveness is classified.
If it bugs you, you can alter MAD effectiveness in one of the game files - preferably in the mods folder but you could alter the core files if you want.
Also the game and its minimal documentation don’t at all explain to what is happening or even that this is a possibility.
I forget whether some, all, or none of the helos have MAD. But all the base game fixed wing aircraft have it.
A Ka-25 could only carry 1,900 kg of disposable ordinance (~2 torpedoes) and had a range of 400 km (about 2 1/2 hours of fuel).
(Actually iirc they have unlimited depth charges? but other ordnance such as torpedoes and buoys are finite and counted)
I rationalise it as: if they had an active NATO contact in a hot war they would stay on station until relieved by another aircraft.
FWIW, I have no problem killing escorts even in a deathtrap diesel Soviet sub.
But we should not be taking space on this unrelated topic. Want to make a new topic so we can discuss that elsewhere?
