Mixing AI and human players in online multiplayer mode (edit: +basic functionality)

It doesn't seem possible to combine human and AI players in an online multi-player game. Will this feature be implemented when the multiplayer mode is next enhanced? It would be nice to have the ability to include a set # of humans (whether open to all or by invitation/private) as well as a set# of AI characters....
