Make a manual save at the last shrine before you fight Sanada.
If he doesn't drop the piece you want, just exit the game, reload your safe and try again.
There's a chance he drops the smithing text too.

Put "equipment drop rate" on you, make sure to use the proper kodama blessing, wear the kodama bowl; and use guardian spirit that increases equipment drop rate. 👍🏽
