"Portal Stories: VR" is a 10 year old mod of a mod of Portal 2 (yes, the developer modded their own mod). At least they're not trying to get paid for this, but lately mods for games just feel like "authorized" asset flips, it really is taking someone else's assets and trying to make a game out of them... and who could have guessed, almost always, the quality isn't all that much different from when people go on a shopping spree through the Unity Asset Store. So, this Portal 2 flavoured asset flip has a few poorly assembled puzzles that don't make great use of the portal gun so excellently employed in the Portal series, it's quite buggy (you can get stuck in the floor, etc etc), and it's certainly not fun.

It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool.

You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me.

Imagine trying to control gamers for the use of a game engine you don't even own and that you used to make a glorified asset flip out of. That's audacious. The developer does NOT own the copyright to Portal 2 and is in no position to make demands of people because he mangled it a bit.

I wish there was a sideways thumb review...

On the one hand, there are NO portals in this game. This is absolutely not Portal in VR.

On the other hand it kinda sorta has the other elements of the game (moving boxes, lasers and glass boxes), and the "portal" effect is achieved somewhat by a teleport mechanic...

But its NOT portal, so if you are looking for "portal but in VR" this is not it. It kinda feels like an employee at valve worked on this for a few days and gave up before they actually added portals into the engine.
