Momodora was an interesting series to learn about as a whole. The first games started as shorter free projects that took very heavy inspiration from Cave Story, and just six years from the beginning of this journey we get Reverie under the Moonlight, the fourth installment and a full-length game experience that takes a heavy swerve into the metroidvania approach to gameplay. It's hard to not love this series seeing it go from simple pixel designs to detailed animations that are really expressive.

As for the actual game it does succeed in setting a very strong almost gothic atmosphere and provides for a lot of entertainment in trying to fill out the map and get all the collectables, which I did alongside my main playthrough. The music takes on a more melodic approach which ranges between strong mood setting and just serviceable, but there are a few notable tracks that I did really like.

While the combat wasn't anything particularly unique the bosses all put up really strong fights and I had to put in the legwork to overcome them all which was a plus. I feel that some parts of the game fall to the wayside particularly with the story, however with the main focus being on atmosphere, ability progression and exploration I give this game solid points.

cute metroidvania that i would say is probably one of my favorites overall for its solid gameplay and gorgeous art style.
not so fun on the harder difficulties they made me squeal
