Do I need to play prior Momodora games to understand this one?

I will make it clear, I HAVE beaten this game before but it was SO long ago that I forgot most of everything that happens. I got the newest game, so I figured i'd refresh my memory and play through this one again before doing the new one Then I thought, do I need to play the prior ones for all these to make more sense? Or is it skippable?...

Truly a big advancement from the Cave Story-like graphics and gameplay from the previous games (which by itself is not a bad game, but this new style fits better), and a really cute artstyle. Controls are really fluid and it's a really fun game overall. Medium difficulty is a bit too easy for medium. I got stuck in around 70% map completion, unsure of how to progress. Truly Castlevania SOTN inspired, and many Metroid gimmicks here and there. Could say quite the masterpiece.

Will update this once I finish.
