A Few Notes for New Players
I had wanted to play this game for years and finally took the plunge. I loved it until I tried to exit the game and found there was no obvious save feature. At this point, I had more than 2 hours of game time and this was the only reason I did not request a refund.

After reading the discussion forums, there are a few things to know:

1. Many of the 'You are Here' maps are hidden save points. When you approach, an icon appears and you use a mouse click (or controller action) to save your game. A small dot with the word 'saving' appears in the lower right corner of the screen.

2. The 'Motion Activated Events' can be accessed on your schedule and the game is automatically saved after each. There are around 5 in each area. Thus, you can manage your save points by choosing when you activate them. Activating these orbs is tricky.. you hold down the right mouse button and move back and forth (or tilt your controller) until the Orb becomes a pin-point and explodes. You are successful when dialog appears and the environment changes from day to night. You'll see the save message a few seconds after the event is completed.

3. Walking is very slow and running is slow, as well. Prepare to be patient in your travels.

4. If you have issues with the graphics, there is a thread in the forum about tweaking your graphics card settings. I have a nVidia GE Force card and did not experience anything terrible but I did make the recommended changes and have played without issue.

5. Follow the dancing light to find new points of interest. Explore everything!

Once I understood how to manage my save points and quit losing progress, I relaxed and am really enjoying this marvelous journey!

I've been grappling with this save point issue since starting the game two days ago. Thanks for the info about the map.

Ahh, the "motion activated events" are a about keeping the lights in certain spot, much like a balancing minigame, NOW I get it...

I also want to add that, for Nvidia cards, setting the "low lantency mode" to ultra (in the control panel) is key to get a fluid performance

I don't think saves are connected to maps. I couldn't get to save at maps at any rate. The game auto-saves after certain dialogues.

The game doesn't "force" players to trigger the events that lead to an auto save. I requested a refund because I don't have the time to replay a few hours of the game because an auto save wasn't triggered. That really disappoints me because this should have been a game I liked.

To enable the 'map-save' behavior, do this:

1. in Steam on the Library tab, right click on the game name and click Properties
2. in the properties dialog's left-hand pane, select Betas
3. in the Betas dialog, to the right of the Beta Participation item, click the drop-down menu and choose the map_save game version
4. exit and restart the game if it's currently running

Afterwards, in the Library game list, [map-save] will appear at the right-hand end of the game name.

(I see that there's now a pinned topic that describes this in more detail)
