LOCATE NIGHTDIVE STUDIOS AND DEFEND IT AT ALL COSTS...

Thank u guys for respecting this game enough to only enhance it for modern systems and not messing up the perfect formula it already has. Same old glorious Turok 2 from 98 but with buttery smooth frames and animations, textures upscaled to HD resolutions, motion blur, depth of field all that good stuff as well as a few new features like a model viewer. THIS is how you remaster an old classic thank u ND!

If Dark Souls on nightmare difficulty was a labyrinth where the goal was to figure out where to go next, it would be called Turok 2.

tl;dr: Perfect port, okay game

If you're like the majority of people looking at this game, who know how they feel about Turok 2 and just want to know if this is a good way to play it, yes. The port is fantastic. Looks awesome, runs flawlessly.

If you're like me, one of the few who are coming into Turok 2 fresh, the game is fine. I recently decided to buy all 3 Nightdive remasters and play through them in order. I was a little too young when they came out and missed the boat, but I've always been curious about them, specifically Turok 2.

Unfortunately, I wish I'd played it in period. The game design just hasn't aged all that well. My biggest problem is that every level ends up being a big labyrinth, which gets very frustrating when you miss one objective and have to repeatedly back-track trying to find it. I could see how in it's time, this was viewed as a way to increase longevity and make sure people get their money's worth, but today it's just an inconvenience. My main other issues are enemies that lock-on to you through walls, so the second you turn a corner you get blasted with pinpoint accuracy, and movement that feels sluggish compared to Turok 1 (by far the best part of Turok 1, and it admittedly might not have bothered me if I didn't play the two back to back).

I don't want to make it sound like the game is completely unredeemable. The arsenal is definitely the biggest standout and where most of the game's notoriety comes from. The weapons are unique and most weapons are viable until the end. The gunplay is also satisfying when it works. Guns have secondary modes that all provide trade-offs to the primary fire and it's fun to experiment with the strengths and weaknesses of each. The biggest frustration in combat for me is that the importance of headshots is undermined by the unreliability of the hitboxes. The melee attacks seemed almost impossible to consistently aim at the head, which results in a vastly longer TTK on some enemies and can open you up to a lot of unnecessary damage when you're low on ammo. The level design also isn't all bad. I really enjoyed the triceratops tank section and there were plenty of interesting traversal options, even if the satisfaction from exploration was replaced by the frustration of spending 80% of the game lost. This isn't helped by the lack of landmarks and the fact that every level has at most two different design languages, leading almost every room in a level looking nearly identical.

I feel the need to reiterate that this is a great port, and imo Turok 2 was a marginal improvement over Turok 1, if not just because it fixed 1's biggest issue of enemies constantly spawning 3 inches from you. Overall, this game is easy to recommend for anyone who's a fan of Turok 2 looking to revisit it again, but it's not nearly as easy recommending any version of Turok 2 to someone thinking of jumping in for the first time.
