DMC is originally a free mod included in an HL update during the WON era, so of course it was free inside the VALVe game collection.
Besides, it's not a deadass game, come play in our servers from time to time; there are always players joining after a few minutes. Also, most DMC players would also go to the original version of the game, QuakeWorld (or netQuake depending on where you plan to play)
it actually has gameplay differences compared to netQuake/QuakeWorld. For instance, slope boosts do not exist at all, altering the movement abilities. And the netcode feelings are close to netQuake, as the client prediction (used in QuakeWorld however) is disabled.
My servers do restore the client prediction, allowing players to actually hit players better.
