As the title say, I feel like with the 2 first ships, I can't go more than a few sectors away before getting destroyed. Last game, with the light carrier (the first ship), I went on a station, had to defend it, the ship spawned by me and kill me while I couldn't even do anything (3 jumps after I started a new game...). I have a pretty good starter ship, but every time I enter a dangerous environment, it shreds my hull and kills me. Why don't shields or point defenses try to stop the asteroids?

I have been playing for about 100 hours in total now and for the life of me I don't seem to be getting much better. I don't think I've ever put so much time into a game yet been unable to 'crack the code' to improving considerably. I tend to start out with the default ship, get as many fighter drones as possible, and go from there but clearly this strategy is not working.
