This is missing part of the basic schmup formula that makes them playable, a little indicator telling me where things are going to spawn. It's a gamble being anywhere near the bottom or top of the screen because things can spawn right on top of you. Traditionally a little chevron indicating position of an incoming spawn will be deployed prior to the unit so you can avoid them.
