Handling of *-tiles
While in many cases it is nice to use the * and simply 'hope for the best'...in certain cases the current behaviour can be disadvantageous to the player. Specifically when playing with the bonus-multipliers. The player might 'think' the * is a specific letter. But the current algorithm will always determine the * represents the lower alphabetic letter that matches; thus in some cases not triggering the modifier.

There are two logical solutions to this. First, the player could identify which letter they want to lay down using the *, or two always choose the solution that is best for the player.

I agree with this.

Then again, the * tiles are extremely powerful already. Maybe it's okay that the ideal letter bag is not just * tiles.

I agree. That is why I had two logical solutions

Personally I also think it's better to choose which letter it's 'supposed' to be rather than the game choosing the 'best' answer. Still, I personally think as a player I should be able to decide whether * Q U A T E = E Q A T E or A Q U A T E (the latter of which the algorithm will automatically choose because A comes before E; even though the former was what I wanted, because I had a modifier when the first and last letter were the same).

It's not about being able to 'beat' the game (by spamming asterisks). It's about being in control of the game. And being able to use these skills for an optimal play.

Maybe if the * had an overlay that showed what letter the game was counting it as, that would help.
