Sorry to be a noob, but how do I get sticks for crafting?

So I've tried playing multiplayer since the update and have had the same issue every time. First, the other person I can see type in chat but they can't see me type. Second, I can see their character but they can't see mine, I'm a ghost. Third, the other player cannot open chests for anything. This happened every multiplayer match I've had since the update....
