If your looking for the best Wolfenstein series experience then I would very much consider The Old Blood before The New Order because of it being a prequel and the events in this game answered a couple questions I had in regards to the timeline and certain people that I had when I played The New Order first in the series lineup.

- Combat is pretty similar with minor differences but nothing that jumps out to me.

- Story is well done, at first I wasn't sure how zombies/ paranormal vibe would fit, but upon playing it, it grew on me making me a fan.

- Characters are pretty similar with better backstory to some, but I did feel a couple characters deserved a little more time in the story, but the short time they had, they made a fair impact on the story.

- Weapons were really fun to use, new ones were introduced and fit so well in many situations giving the player options on how to handle areas/ levels

- Challenges were introduced and to me personally it can be a grind if your going for achievements but can also be fun, they're areas right from the story line even right down to the situations within the story making them familiar when you decide to try the challenges out.

Yes, ha ha, a hot dog! That was William Blazkowicz's response (best-known to friends as BJ), when asked if he's from Frankfurt in a jocular pun, the German officer said, “Frankfurt, Frankfurter”. It's like uttering, Hamburg, Hamburger. Obviously, his reply is, in effect, a Frankfurter Würstchen, albeit the American version is a tongue-in-cheek hot dog, due to which some demonyms can be hilarious.

A few hours before. It was 1946, the sky looked diaphanous, and the snow-capped Austrian mountains were discernible. Blazkowicz, disguised as a German officer, was dozing while traveling with Wesley, who was driving; both were headed to the famous and imposing castle of Wolfenstein. The assigned mission was referred to as Operation “Wolfstone”, whose objective was to steal a secret document from the hands of archaeologist Helga von Schabbs. The document revealed the location of Deathshead's compound. However, the victory of the German army, commanded by General Wilhelm Strasse, was broadcast on the radio. The Allies were losing the war. Eventually, after going to the security checkpoint, they wind up at Helga's research office. They didn't find the paper trail and were soon caught. This is the way the action-packed story starts off.


Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is the remake of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, although with a brand-new narrative setting. This is the prelude to the modern-day Wolfenstein series, where it tells us a feasible plan to thwart the advance of the Germans by stealing a one-off secret document. The story gets convoluted, evolving from a straightforward task into one fraught with perilous situations. I'm not conversant with the whole series, but I was compelled by the title's tagline, “Old Blood”, to be the first one to try it out. I must admit, the story with a comic character realised in a parallel or alternative world is riveting and curious, as Bethesda usually applies to most of its games. What would have happened if the Germans of the Third Reich had won the war? The answer is akin to Philip K. ♥♥♥♥'s uchronic novel, The Man in the High Castle.

The story is divided into chapters and, at the same time, into two parts. Each chapter features a movie-style format. However, the priority belongs to the gameplay, which must adhere to the classic sense of shooting video games set in WWII. The way of narrating the plot opts for the cinematic method to draw out dramatic moments between the protagonist and the tragic secondary characters. Otherwise, the footage acts as an apt epilogue to each entry and final section of the chapters. Although the script doesn't reflect the best-developed narrative, the documents scattered around provide an insightful overview of the parallel world. The all-encompassing plot goes awry, as it features many narrative twists. It's not disappointing at all, but it's surprising and unnerving. And our character Blazkowicz is a crusader against atrocities and menaces, a character who isn't discreet but with a personality that differs from “war heroes”.

It's fantastic how everything is strung together, adding dungeon and zombie themes to a warlike setting. The panorama from both inside and outside the castle, where the centre of the plot converges, it feels and looks breath-taking within a historical past due to the mandate of King Otto I, conveying a medieval-modern atmosphere. The game doesn't involve heaps of scenarios, but rather each map or scenario is well-used to transform it as the plot unfolds. The same place morphs in its appearance but sticks to its identity. I enjoy meandering through the corridors of the castle as well as looking into locations such as cemeteries, catacombs, halls, the town, and its villa, realising its own adjoining world full of secrets.


Speaking of secrets, the game included a few, and the one that grabbed my interest the most were Blazkowicz's nightmares. In some spots, there are beds where the character can sleep. This will get us to the game Wolfenstein 3D. It calls for traversing levels, and we're only equipped with a pistol and a machine gun. A level corresponds to a bed on the main plot map. Participating or not in the mini-game doesn't interfere with the story.

The game is mainly a shooter. Belonging to an old style, we must collect ammunition, health packs, or armour to replenish them. The map updates and reveals itself as we go along, guided by the main objective. The central thrust of, as Blazkowicz suggests, is to shoot down the enemies, which is why we engage in two lines of action: stealth and direct combat. Stealth is fairly decent and well-implemented. We can often ambush, sneak up on, or elude them. On some maps, there are officers who, if we alert them, will constantly call in reinforcements. As for action, we possess a wide-ranging arsenal with which we can frequently use melees (pipes, which can be used to climb rock walls), double weapons, grenades, or heavy weapons.

By the way, there are advantages that are unlocked as we complete certain challenges, such as overcharging health thanks to constantly collecting medical packages. Or, carry more ammunition for a weapon or overload the armour. In this way, we “improve” the character. On the other hand, the game affords a different kind of pace so as not to turn into merely a shooter. It's uncomplicated, but always bringing together a solid thread to tie the action into the gameplay with the narrative drama packed with cinematographic shots without ever getting tedious or wearisome. Finally, the arena mode can be played, where we must defeat enemies to get gold, silver or bronze medals. It's not the strong point, but it focuses even more on the fast-paced action.


The Old Blood is a good opening, leaving an intriguing final scene, which paves way to the first part of the saga. Of course, this game was not published first. I like these stories where the ending is not decisive. Like every war game, we join the rest of the army. This is the way to present its epilogue. While the adventure was enthralling, with two bosses, but performing a short story. In addition, the game offers many references to movies and games from its own company. Even the cover has B-movie-like art. The soundtrack hardly stands out. Mick Gordon attempts to address themes of uncertainty with melodies created on strings and combined in a procedural. I won't comment on it. It's a good start to the saga, which brings the seasoning that spur us to jump into the next chapter of the plot.
