I am in the same situation. i5-6600 and a gtx1080 and I can only launch in openGL but cannot read anything.

I don't have a solution but i have similiar specs and the same exact problem. It only works if i "force openGL" and even then the text is messed up and the game will flicker from time to time. It feels good im not alone though.

I have the same problem with i7-7700k and 1080Ti

Did someone found the solution ?

Not a single solution since July? This is bull crap. Finally giving this game a chance and this happens?

I fixed it but I can't honestly remember what I did in the end to resolve it. I think i had to disabke DPI scaling to stop the text getting garbled

Setting DPI scaling behavior to Application didn't work. Anyways, setting to OpenGL over DX11 on a high end platform is a pretty sh*tty alternative. :/ And still no dev response.

Found the solution guys: Add the following to "Set Launch Options", -force-d3d11

It worked....does the mean the game is running in D3D12 or D3D10 which is causing compatibility issues?

EDIT: False flag. Unlike before, it works when it wants to. Any use of compatibility will cause the font gibberish problem. This is so frustrating.

When it does work in OpenGL or D3D9, its unplayable as no matter what its locked at 30fps and has A LOT of visual glitches including flickering lighting.

Alright guys! I've found the solution!

First hover over I Am Bread, then Click properties, after that click on local files, then click browse local files, click the I am Bread application itself and run it. (if this doesn't work run the program as administrator .

I tried it, but I couldn't find local files. Maybe we have different computers?

I had the same problem. Using the force OpenGL option is the only way I was able to start the game without a crash but the text was garbled and unreadable.

I found that if I simply cycled through the language option on the startup men (the British flag i.e. English) by clicking on that radio button until I got back to the British flag, that I was able to (magically) gain readable text in the menu that carried over to the rest of the game.

I'm having this problem too. Forcing OpenGL works, but with the garbled writing and lighting bugs. Nothing else I've tried will get the game to launch. Has anybody found a solution?

Forcing it to run with DirectX 9[i.imgur.com] solved the issue for me
Also, doing this does not introduce the so-called "garbled text" problem, caused by OpenGL

Quoting a solution that worked for me in 2022 on Windows 10.

For anyone trying to play this game lately, I had constant crashes on startup and couldn't get it to load at all.
Finally I tried launching it with "Force OpenGL" - I was able to get the game to launch, but the text wasn't rendering properly.

After launching with OpenGL I added "-force-d3d11" to the launch options in the general properties and launched it normally with "Play I Am Bread" - it launched just fine and I was able to change my resolution and configure all of the graphics options I wanted and it's running great now.

Best of luck!
