Reinstalled after a few months and it's pretty much unplayable on a 4080 and 7950X3D with 32GB RAM on a GEN4 NVME SSD at 4K ultra. How is it possible that performance has become worse?

Hello. I am having trouble playing as the huns, as i find that their roster is very expensive; i am only able to upkeep 2 entire armies while several armies from the west are chasing me around with 3 or 4 stacks of each faction. It may be that i am playing with the wrong units, but i could not find anything better than doomstacking horse archers and some artillery. I found melee cavalry and melee infantry pretty bad... I have had this on my list since CD-ROM days. It's on sale again this week, along with RTW2 and RTW-Redone. Trying to decide which, if any, are worth it over the originals? Opinions welcome.
