Wolves are out of control
I dont know if it is just me but the last few days wolves are way OP. Half the games i start a wolf will immediately starts growling at me having done hardly more then a handfull of footsteps from my spawn. They also keep sneaking up on me, when I'm sitting at a campfire they will appear out of nowhere and attack me, i round a corner where i just came thru and a wolf leaps out from behind a tree. Mind you, none of these growl, howl or anything, they just suddenly appear. At one point i managed to get an arrow off and i pulled out my knife, usually this would have been an easy victory but not this time. He still killed me. They are literally everywhere, every 100 metres no matter what direction i go there's atleast one wolf and if i'm lucky i'll immediately agro a pack seconds from spawning.

I dont know what happened but this seriously isnt fun anymore. Also, why do i keep getting foodpoisoning from safe to eat items? Even cooked items still give food poison even when at say 76% condition. I'm by no means an excellent interloper but the last few days have just been horrid. Something is up with these wolves, they are like wasps at the end of summer, everywhere and super annoying and tenacious. Anyone else share my experience or am i just triggered right now?

avoid scent because it gathers wolves close to you and they stay there
This is one reason I play on a Custom game with wolf spawn rate set to Low and wildlife respawn times set to High.

I think the scent mechanism is broken. If I have any meat they come to me ( or go away if I drop it) even if I havent got a scent marker ( 1 of the 3). That means that it is triggering based on scent, but then what is the purpose of the scent marker? to tell me that it is scent +1? that is useless. If they are going to trigger at all, then the scent marker should have something. I assume it is working as designed, I just would say the design is wrong.
I never thought wolf gameplay was fun. I either turn them off or have passive wildlife enabled. The wolves act like zombies and the minigame taking you out of the world just never felt fun or even scary.
In my Interloper (vanilla) games, wolves numbers are normal, ex. in ML just a group of 3 in the lake, that sometimes move for near the derailment, and 1 wolf in other places, e.g. between Camp Office and tunnel for FM, or in front Dam.

Don't rely on scent marker. Before I enter the area where I expect wolves in the vicinity - I just tap '3' a few times to drop whatever I have that can possibly attract wolves. Yes, that means even one piece of cooked meat/fish gets eaten, and the remainder is dropped for future use. It's almost impossible to starve to death on Stalker or lower difficulty, so...
This doesn't sound like something new...since FM was added, I've always expected to see:
1 near the ML transition
1-2 near the BR transition
1 near the entrance to hat creek
1 on the tracks of west FM
2-3 near Spence
1 near the broken snow shelter in the south east
1 up the hill where the south-east transmitter is located

That is 8-13 expected. Usually 1 or 2 of those groups mentioned doesn't actually show up in any adventure through FM.

1 to 3 around Poarcher's - sometimes.

1 between Spencer and the new Prepper Bunker - in a place perfect for ambush, wolf in this area is new.

1 near the cave at left of Spencer's, close to Mouse Spawn area.

1 near the transition cave for Bleak Inlet.

1 in front - but a bit far; of the cave in the hill behind Poarcher's.

This in Interloper, in Staker the groups can be 3, even 4.

I agree with this assessment as well.

I was speaking mostly towards Stalker since the OP was complaining about wolf population and Stalker is where the wolves live. Expect around 10+ wolves to be active at any one time. In an open region like FM, expect at least one to always be in sight somewhere...

I haven't noticed any changes to the wolf population lately

In Stalker difficulty it can get a bit ridiculous with 2/3 pack of 5 timberwolves close to each others and you end with a morale bar as large as your screen by a running into an other pack while fleeing.
But in Interloper I didn't noticed more wolfs than usual.
however they do seems to smell you from farther away than before even with a single piece of cooked meat on you.
Especially timberwolves. I could lure them to Bricklayer's Retreat for a safe kill, just by standing at the entrance while carrying a rabbit.

Actually i was referring to interloper games, not stalker and there is still tons of wolves around. Well in the early days of my latest run, it seems things are slowing down now but i got to ML and standing on the railroad track looking at the camp office i could see 3 wolves on the lake, 2 more down the track and i could hear more towards the hunters cabin. There was almost nowhere to go without going through wolf territory. I'm all for challenging gameplay but just spawning wolves all over seems like a really cheap mechnic. I mean you couldnt have this many domestic dogs in such a small area without infighting to break out, let alone wolves.
I set spawn distance medium in custom settings, this will prevent absurd wolf patrol around your house.
Also, spawn chance LOW seems does ♥♥♥♥ because i have the same wolf population as playing MEDIUM.

Yes, detection range was increase after TFTF, what sometimes play in wolves favor, sometimes in player favor, specially with the bear, that grow at distance that allow player run away. Due this beware of Moose areas, because when he detect you he charge.

That's pretty normal for ML (Interloper vanilla), It was worse in old previous versions, there was a time when there were wolves in front of Camp Office.

The 3 wolves in the lake alternate with 1 wolf, and alternate between front of the lake and back of the lake.

The 3 wolves in direction of derailment alternate between in front of wagons and behind wagons - in direction of the Dan; and sometimes are absent.

Going from Camp Office for Trappers you are subject to meet 3 wolves and 1 bear if don't choose well the path. Tip, keep high in the terrain.

Is not good idea carry meat, raw or cooked, between this two places.
I'm at day 250 on my 500 days achievement run (Stalker) and I have 212 wolves killed. The problem is that they keep respawning every few days. BI and BRM turn intro Red Dead Redemption with you blasting left and right. I'd definitely prefer less wolves, but as a trade-off make them twice as deadly. With good enough clothing and a hatchet you can pretty much charge them head on and don't even get your clothes torn. It's THAT ridiculous.

i think thats a better solution. it can get tiresome when you kill loads of wolves only for them to respawn a couple days later. its just too easy like you said. its not really fun.
