Progress Report - Leaderboards

Hello!

In lieu of an update (and because I'm sick at the moment), I decided to give a sneak peek at something I'm working on.

I've gotten a couple of requests to add Leaderboards so you can gloat about your high scores to the entire world, and I'm happy to say they will be coming eventually™.

This is just a mock-up of the UI.

Here's how I want the Leaderboards to work:

There will be three different Leaderboards: Classic, Classic (No Mutators), and Mutator Roulette.
The Leaderboards are sorted by High Score, but you can also view other info like the run seed or which Mutators a player had enabled.
You can "Challenge" a player to beat their high score, which will start a run using their exact settings (such as unlocked weapons, Mutators, and seed).

This is still very early in development, so I can't say when this will be releasing.

suggestion, 3 countdown timer after unpausing

3 second timer for player to quickly remember where they were before pausing the game to do something else, with an option to disable this ofc

Update 1.3 - New room layout, optimization, and fixes!

Hello!

Turns out fixing issues with the window size not being saved led to even more issues, like the window being positioned off screen. But this patch should fix the issues caused by the fix to the previous issues. Such are the joys of game development.

I've also done a few tweaks to hopefully improve performance for people on lower end hardware. You might think a 2D pixel art game wouldn't need any optimization. I thought so too, until I got a report from someone running the game under the minimum requirements getting 8 FPS. The horror!

While there wasn't too much I could do, I did do the following:

Did an optimization pass on the HUD so it isn't using layers upon layers of CanvasLayers (that's a lot of layers). The individual elements like the weapon and score should all be rendered on the same layer now.
Reduced shader compilation stutter by loading some assets when the game is initially booted. The version of Godot we're using doesn't support precompilation, so this is a workaround for that.

Finally, I added in a new room layout, because a patch with only fixes would be boring.

It was supposed to be a courtroom because I've been binging the AA Trilogy. But it kinda turned into a crying face instead.

Tweaks & Additions

Did not update the localization files. Sorry.
Added a new room layout.
Optimized parts of the HUD by reducing the use of CanvasLayers.
Reduced shader compilation stutter by loading some assets on boot.

Fixes

Fixed the "Fullscreen" option not displaying correctly. (The button could be toggled off but the text would say On.)
Fixed the window title bar sometimes being positioned off screen. (This was caused by the window centering code. Now the game won't try to center the window if the vertical resolution is above a certain size.)
Fixed the Flamethrower and Molotov incorrectly granting the "Collateral" score bonus.

Small update this time. The game should be fully translated in all languages once more, and I also fixed an issue with the window size if you're not playing in fullscreen.

Awesome game!

Good music, ok game design and a fine art style so far Kinda kept forgetting dash existed though not sure if that's just me Felt like a Hotline Miami training sim Though small touch I would recommend to the credits section is to change the font size of either the category or the names to be bigger or smaller as to know who did what or to change the colour of the category text, right now its kinda hard to differentiate between department text and credited person...

Pretty fun Demo!

Had this suggested to me by a friend, and overall, despite it not being my normal game, I had quite a blast! Moving fast is always fun, and enemies dying in one shot is fairly nice. Different guns manage to find decent niches, my favorite being the Sniper Rifle or LMG. The sound design is satisfying, and the visual elements do a good job of explaining what is happening- the enemies who put down the mines being a very nice example. I am also a fan of the Mutator system, adding personal difficulty or custom...

My very brief feedback on the game

First and foremost, I am not usually good with top-down 2D games, I always struggled to play them and over time i stopped seeking them all together. Something about the perspective really messes with me, so take everything I say with a with a tad bit of salt. 1- Red background is really hard on the eyes and some menu elements like the explanation box during the restart (the striped box that pops and gives clues on what the buttons do in the bottom right corner) was obscured enough that i didn't realize it...

Super fun and very promising!

Genuinely a lot of fun, a simple gameplay loop with a lot of creativity and variety! I've only played a little bit but the progression seems solid and the mutators are a great idea to spice up the gameplay and make it more customizable. Weapon select is an awesome idea, could definitely see people doing specific weapon-only runs. I also really like that the rounds are fast which makes it enjoyable to keep trying for new PBs and a lot of fun to play a few quick rounds as a pick-up game. Balancing seems real...
