Our First Permanent Hero Immortal

When we first set out to make Immortal, the question was raised whether Immortals would be Heroes on the battlefield like Warcraft 3 or Commanders like Starcraft 2 Co-op. To which we replied, why not both? This was eventually refined into 3 distinct Immortal categories. With the release of Atzlan, we now have representation from each category. Ajari, Orzum, and Mala are Commanders; Xol is a Temporary Hero; and Atzlan is a Permanent Hero. As the name suggests, Atzlan is a permanent fixture on the battlefield. You'll start with him in your base, and he'll only disappear when "killed". However, since he is immortal, he can be brought back for the low low price of 25 pyre. We've got some more mobile Permanent Heroes in development, but Atzlan is special in that he has 0 movement speed and can only live on one of his Root Buds.

Vanguards

Resinant: A deployable *Artillery* unit that trades mobility for range and area damage. If you've been with us for a while, you'll remember this guy was once a standard Aru unit that was replaced with the Brood Anchor. Back from the dead (like all reborn) the Resinant features a minimum range when deployed and gets a maximum range boost when deployed on Rootway.
Root Shepherd: A fast, anti-light *Skirmisher* unit that helps Atzlan spread the Rootway and can be upgraded to be hidden while on Rootway. The Root Shepherd has a bouncing attack that does less damage on each bounce.

Powers

Summon Root Bud: Summon a Root Bud at the target location. Over time the Root Bud will spread Rootway to a maximum distance. Root Buds can only be Summoned near Strongholds (Grove Hearts and God Hearts) or other Root Buds and only on Rootway. This spell is cooldown only (no Pyre cost) and stores 6 charges, so feel free to spread the Rootway to your heart's content!
Prophet of the Roots: Move Atzlan to a new Root Bud, or bring him back to the battlefield if he's been defeated. Atlzan Blesses Root Buds he visits, giving them a massive HP boost and buffing nearby units. This also instantly spreads Rootway to the maximum distance from the Root Bud.
Wall of Roots: Summon a Wall of Roots, a targetable building with HP that can only survive permanently on Rootway. If built off Rootway it will lose HP quickly. Click and drag to draw where you want the Wall.
Summon Deep Wyrm: Atzlan's Ultimate Ability! A force of immense power, the Root Wyrm cannot be controlled or destroyed. During it's timed life it will seek and destroy enemies on the Rootway before returning to the Deep. He has a lore accurate name, but we all call him "Steve".

Bots!

One of the most requested features, you can now play against and with bots in 1v1, 2v2, and PvE Missions. You can select the Immortal and difficulty level of Bots in the Teams page of the custom lobby flow in the Main Hub. Please note that these are VERY basic bots and we'll be improving them for future patches. Please let us know how it goes! Are they too easy? Too hard? Are certain behaviours too easy to exploit or take away from the immersion of the experience? Everything you write in our discord is read and considered with an open mind.

Build Assist Preview

Build Assist will now show you the next thing it's planning to build. You can use this to get a jump on things. Remember that Build Assist will always take the most efficient path to build the army you have selected. This is one small improvement in a long line of planned upgrades. We've got a lot of wild stuff planned for Build Assist, much of it a result of your feedback, so please keep it coming!

Build Grid

Hell, it's about time. One of the things we've set out to do when iterating on the build grid concept is to create consistent walling rules. For this test, buildings with at least 1 square adjacent will form a wall. This means no ground units will be able to pass through regardless of their size. Single square gaps and buildings (or terrain) that touch diagonally (the points of the corners only) will not form a wall, so any ground units will be able to pass through. The goal here is that players (especially new players) won't have to find a YouTube tutorial or memorize exact placements on each map to create walls with confidence.

Evenly Distributed Upgrades

If you have mulitple copies of a tech building and queue upgrades, they will evenly spread out between those buildings instead of stacking up on one. (looking at you +1/+1)

Teleport abilities will now work if you target somewhere without vision (except if it's higher ground).

Spectator UI starts with a blank panel in the bottom right. As a workaround, you can shift select 2 entities to make it disappear or select a single entity to see the Details Panel.
A number of UI elements are placeholders (they should be somewhat obvious).
Zooming out in spectator mode causes health bars to be comically l o n g.
Creating a Lobby with only bots as players (you would be the spectator in this case) nearly instantly launches the game.
When you leave the game it will nearly instantly relaunch.
Many video tooltips are blurry/unreadable

Missions

Removed enemy base modifiers. They are now part of random bonus objectives.
An Enemy Base is now considered as destroyed when all the unit training buildings and Strongholds are destroyed.
The total number of enemy bases and the number of destroyed enemy bases are now displayed in the objective panel.
Enemy bases next to the player's starting location don't have anti-ground defense buildings anymore.

Updated the enemy unit composition selection:

At the start of the mission, the game selects between 1 and 3 unit compositions. A unit composition is made of 1 core unit, 1 support unit and 1 anti-air unit.
Enemy units can use their abilities.
Units with abilities can finally be selected when generating enemy unit compositions.
The enemy can train tier 2 units on normal and tier 3 units on Hard.
The selection of enemy unit composition is less chaotic.
On Normal and above, there is always a Tier 2 unit composition.
On Hard and above, there is always a Tier 3 unit composition.

Updated the mission score:

Removed the bonus objective performance score
Added the maximum possible score for main, bonus objectives and enemy bases to destroy.
Destroying an enemy base now gives 100 score. The maximum score possible to get from destroying enemy bases now depends on the number of enemy bases.
The mission's elapsed time is now a bonus score.

Updated Alloy and Ether resource packs:

They can now only be picked up by ground units.
Alloy resource pack: Decreased spawn chance from 20 to 5%. Increased the resource gain from 50 to 300.
Ether resource pack: Decreased spawn chance from 10 to 3%. Increased the resource gain from 50 to 200.
Pyre resource pack: Decreased spawn chance from 5 to 1%.
Changed the color of the Alloy resource pack minimap icon.
In Holdout and Golem Factory, the resources outside of the player's base, Pyre camps, Tower Foundations now spawn on random locations.
Players now start with a small group of random units and with 100 Pyre.
On hard, insane and immortal, the enemy has all researches enabled at the start of the mission.
When a neutral entity attacks or is attacked by an enemy units, they are both revealed during 5 seconds.
Changed the objective completed and mission notification sounds.
Added a notification when the game stage reaches the Mid-game and the Late-game.
Specifically in missions, Pyre resource packs gives 25 Pyre to all players.
Re-enabled Ajari as a valid enemy immortal.

Holdout

The Nexus' aura now affects the player's units in the entire map.
Significantly increased the effects of the auras.
The Nexus upgrade remaining time, remaining life and its aura effect are now displayed in the objective panel.
Adjusted the quantity of enemy units in each wave

Rae Siege Turret:

It now shoots 4 missiles that deal 25 damage.
Adjusted the Nexus' life so the time for a Rae Siege Turret to destroy the Nexus doesn't change.
Reduced the build time from 180 to 60 seconds.
Adjusted its height and added player color.
It now has an attack range of 2850 and a minimum attack range of 1500.
It can only target ground units.
Units with the Elite buff now do a special attack every 2 seconds regardless of their weapon attack speed and their air/ground target type.
Removed the unit class restriction for the spawning of Elite units
Nexus: prevent decals from being drawn on it. Also added player color on it.
The additional time for the last nexus upgrades now depends on the difficulty:
- Easy: 0s
- Normal: 20s
- Hard: 40s
- Insane: 60s
- Immortal: 80s

Golem Factory

The Power Core's remaining life is now displayed in the objective panel.
Removed the aura of the Power Core and the Rae Golem.
During the high intensity phase, always reveal enemy units that attack the objective and the player's base.

Rae Minor Golems:

Increased Life from 450 to 500
Increased Attack Damage from 25 to 50. Removed the Bonus Damage to Medium and Heavy.
Derelict Golem buff reduces the Attack Speed from 50% to 75%.

Rae Golem:

Increased damage from 100 to 200. Reduce attack speed from 4 to 5 seconds.

Bugfixes

Mission Score: Fixed a bug where a mission's elapsed time was counted before the player has selected difficulty, including some part of the loading part.
Enemy attacks: Fixed a bug where enemy units that would spawn from the edges of the map wouldn't take into consideration the player's air unit ratio.

Tutorial

When the player starts the tutorial with an immortal that isn't Orzum, there is now a message to inform the player to restart the tutorial as Orzum.
Fixed a bug where the Soul foundry bonus objective would be repeatedly triggered after being completed.

We are excited to announce that we are participating in Steam Next Fest: June Edition from June 9th-16th! Our newest build will be available for all to play, for free, for a whole week. We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed making it!

What’s in this demo?

New Immortal!

From the churning depths rises Atzlan, Prophet of the Roots! Embody the might of the Deep with this powerful positional commander. Spread the rootway and rule the overgrown land as an undying green king!

Atzlan’s playstyle is unique among the Aru Immortals, combining powerful spells with an on the battlefield presence. As the Root Prophet, it’s important to grow your territory siege-range zone control and terrain manipulation. Here’s a rundown of his kit!

Passive: Green Thrumb: Friendly units regenerate health quickly around the Prophet.

Utility: Summon Root Bud: Atzlan summons a rootbud in a location with rootway, expanding more rootway outward in a significant radius. Atzlan can store six charges so you can choose where and when you want to expand the rootway.

Ability 1: Prophet of the Roots: The Prophet teleports to any root bud on the map, applying his passive and granting increased sight and full rootway instantly.

Ability 2: Wall of Roots: After a brief casting ritual, Atzlan summons a barrier of durable roots, denying pathing to all units in an area. The wall lasts indefinitely when connected to rootway and slowly decays when disconnected. Enemies can attack the wall to break through.

Ultimate: Summon Deep Wyrm: After a brief wind up, Atzlan calls a mighty beast from the God-Tree’s ecosystem to do battle! The invincible Wyrm (affectionately called “Steve” by our playtesters), is not controllable, but actively hunts down nearby enemies near the rootway, dealing immense damage and displacing enemies with its powerful attack. The Wyrm retreats to the Deep after 20 seconds.

2 New Units Added!

Atzlan brings two unique units with him to the battlefield: the Root Shepherd and the Resinant.

Root Shepherd: A swift and subtle war-shaman, the Root Shepherd a nimble anti-light skirmisher who becomes hidden on Root Way.

Resinant: A heavily armored reborn warrior that can deploy to unleash devastating area of effect attacks at great range. Resinants gain bonus range on Rootway. Position them well and destroy large armies with ease.

Deathmatch AI!

Rejoice bot-slayers, your calls for AI in deathmatch have been answered!

Bots are now playable in both 1v1 and 2v2 deathmatch skirmishes! In the game lobby bots can be set up as any playable Immortal, and they have 6 selectable difficulties: very easy, easy, normal, hard, insane, and Immortal. Whether you want a relaxed and casual experience or want to go all out against a challenging foe, the bots have you covered.

New Procedurally Generated PvE missions!

We have a demo for a new PvE mission type that features randomized features, objectives, and culminates with a boss fight!

The current demo is found on the “Canyon (Mission)” Map. Grab a friend and jam some games at your preferred difficulty.

Oh and players now get random bonus units at the start of every PvE mission. May you forever roll Thrones and Behemoths!

Angels and Prophecies: Design Lessons from Q'rath

Introduction:

Hello, dear community! Dylan “ItWhoSpeaks” Kahn here. While we wait for our summer playtest, I wanted to give you some insight regarding our first faction: Q'rath, the Angelic Empire. This article is a bit of a retrospective, in which we often perform post-mortem covering what we did well and where we made mistakes, with Q’rath being a poignant reflection of what we learned in our modding days. This is an expansive topic, so I feel it's important that we start at the beginning.

Part 1: Solving Design Challenges & The Vanguard Prototype

As some of you know, we got our start as modders in the StarCraft II community, beginning around the late “Wings of Liberty” era in the year leading up to Heart of the Swarm's beta phase. If you played during that time, you will remember that SCII was a very different experience with very conservative strategies. This was due to the high-lethality gameplay where games could just end in the blink of an eye. Additionally, It was just safer (and optimal) to have no more than three mining bases, defending aggression until you could field a large endgame army. In general, matches at the time, as engaging as they were, didn't feel as fun as games of Brood War despite the many advances in UI and pathing. As passionate StarCraft fans, we wanted to learn why the two games felt so different. Generally, it boiled down to SCII having a much shorter time to kill (the time it takes a unit to die in an average match up) relative to its predecessor, StarCraft: Brood War. There were a few reasons for this:

SCII pathing was very good, allowing units to bunch up into tight “balls,” allowing more ranged fire-power to be packed into tighter spaces.
SCII opted for a simplified damage system where units would deal bonus damage to armored or light targets that generally made “hard-counter” relationships more pronounced.
“Area of Effect” spells such as “Psionic Storm” and “Fungal Growth” ended up being balanced against these “death-balls” in such a way that entire armies of infantry could disappear in seconds (or less).

While our Design Leads Travis and Joakim were working on the StarBow mod, Zanya, Tom, and I were working on OneGoal and the Core, a sort of predecessor to the community Public Test Realm that Blizzard eventually employed during SCII’s “Legacy of the Void” expansion (Thanks to Frost Giant's Tim Morten for that!). Despite us not working directly with one another at first, we quickly came together because we were all investigating the same problems SCII's multiplayer suffered from and we were all trying to solve it from different perspectives.

Ultimately, we learned that we needed a game experience with factions that did the following:

Had a generally longer time to kill, particularly in the early game so that low-skill players could have time to react to situations and high skill players had more opportunities to outplay their opponents. (We’ll go into this more in a future article.)
Had fewer “busy work” abilities and had more intuitive, cohesive designs, particularly passives.
Had a stronger focus on positional advantage and respected limitations to movement and mobility, allowing for longer, back-and-forth fights.

The faction we looked at most closely was Brood War's Protoss, which boasted durable and expensive units that felt powerful in the hands of low-skill players but required some finesse and creativity to play at a high level (thinks like Reaver-Shuttle Micro, Carrier-Interceptor leash-range, and Dragoon hold-position kiting are all relevant examples).

In time, these lessons would coalesce into the “Vanguard Mod,” which served as the foundation for IMMORTAL's design. Going into the project, we wanted to apply the lessons we learned from our previous modding work, and we needed a faction that personified this new direction. This would ultimately become the Q'rath Empire.

What Worked:

Hallowed Ground

During Vanguard, we developed two kinds of Protoss factions, the Khalai (High Templar), and the Nerazim (Dark Templar). To mechanically differentiate the two, we really wanted the Khalai to double down on the fantasy of being powerful and tough psionic warriors contrasting to the Dark Templar’s nimbleness and stealth. The Khalai faction traded mobility for raw strength when exposed to power fields generated by their Pylon structures. This mechanic tested extremely well, allowing for the crunchy, positional back-and-forth gameplay that Brood War was so famous for. It also added additional nuance to a faction archetype (the big tough bruiser) that sometimes felt flat relative to more agile factions like Terran or Zerg.

This mechanic became Q'rath's Hallowed Ground and it's remained one of our most effective mechanics.

As we built Q'rath, we learned what kind of bonuses could be given to Q'rath warriors in Hallowed Ground as well as how strong they could be. A balance had to be struck. Units needed to feel noticeably stronger when fighting on their turf but we knew from the difficulties with SCII Protoss that over-reliance on a mechanic (be it Warp Gate or the Sentry's Forcefield), can undermine the gameplay and identity of a unit and the overall fantasy of the faction. Q'rath also had to be fun to play against. Thus, things that generated Hallowed Ground had to be designed to be target-able or temporary. The Zentari boasts a brutal ranged attack when on Hallowed Ground, but due to being paired with Magi or structures, this mechanic serves as a soft anchor, allowing the enemy to out-maneuver them. Conversely, the Saoshin and Sipari are allowed to generate Hallowed Ground far more freely because the Sipari's speed and health bonus is balanced around that increased availability.

Angelic Wards

Q'rath's “angelic ward” mechanic was derived from Brood War's Protoss shields wherein a unit's HP were protected by a constantly regenerating pool of shield HP. This is different from SCII Protoss, wherein shields only regenerated out of combat. While this distinction seems small, the gameplay incentives are pronounced. Constantly regenerating shields favor units that wade into combat and stay there while out of combat regeneration favors units that embrace a skirmishing play-style, trading enemy health for “free” shields. Given Q'rath's vitality and our desire for positional play, we opted for the former, giving the out of combat shield mechanic to the Aru due to their preference for ranged combat and ambushes.

We attempted to spice this up by giving Q'rath the ability to cast abilities by using their ward pool. This cast-from-shield mechanic was intended to incentivize players to take riskier fights but the dynamic proved to be more niche than we anticipated. Currently, the Zephyr, Dervish, Ark Mother, and Throne take wards to power their spells. It's a great way of balancing the power of a powerful spell in certain conditions. For example, the Throne's Tithe-Blades is a terrifying power-amplifier, but requires you to make your army a bit more brittle. This requires the Q'rath player to balance their supply between Thrones and other army units, which limits the “critical mass death-ball” problem many capital ships run into in other RTS games.

Overall, the Angelic Wards and expenditure abilities were a net success and their shortcomings taught us that attritional mechanics don't always lead to better gameplay. This lesson would prove critical to getting Aru right, more on that in another blog post!

What Did Not Work:

Visual Design for RTS: A Trial by Error

Ultimately, we knew that units had to be readable from an RTS perspective, but it was quite another thing to get it right in practice. This was especially true when accounting for larger army sizes, multiple particle effects, and environmental lighting, team color, and faction fantasy. One of our early lessons was designing the Throne. Here was our first in game art test:

This take on the Q'rath capital unit was based on Bas Reliefs from the Persian Empire and the Zoastarian religion. Badass! However, the marquee element, the great geometric wing-mantle, did not show well from various perspectives, especially when the unit moved horizontally relative to the camera (see below). This problem came up again with the Absolver, ultimately forcing us to make it taller and the ring halos wider and thicker. This aspect became known as “clickability” or, the ability for a player to intuitively select their soldiers. Checking for clickability is now a critical phase in any concept for in-game assets.

Accounting for Roles & Gameplay:

The Saoshin is a great example of a unit that was “cursed.” We wanted to have a badass melee battle-caster with a big dramatic ability that let them “super-hero jump” to a friendly unit in peril to save them. Unfortunately, getting the ability to work right was constantly in tension with the unit's identity and its role within the Q’rath army. After seven iterations, we gave it a ranged attack along with an AoE heal, allowing Saoshin to leap and fight with the Sipari they were tasked with protecting.

These issues would only be resolved when we dedicated resources to pre-art gameplay testing, which has been transformative to the efficiency of our pipeline. The lesson: measure three times, cut once.

Part II: Building on Aesthetics, Mechanical Nuance, and Soul

Going forward, our goals with Q'rath is three fold:

1. Use what we know to take exciting design risks. We want to increase the mechanical nuance of Q'rath and push the limits of what the faction can do. Currently, Q’rath is very direct and focused on how it executes its ahem, “strategies.” There is room to open the Angelic Empire up to more tricky tactics and our 6th Immortal aims to do just that. Normally, Q'rath tells you what it's going to do and then does it. Immortal 6 is designed from the ground up to keep opponents guessing. :)

Sneaky sneaky, hush, hush, hush.

2. As we are able, we are going to lean away from the pristine “space paladin” aesthetic and more into the cosmic horror undercurrent of what the angels really are and what they really want to achieve. Currently, our game has a lot of hints about Rath’s intentions and alien nature but with the exception of a few characters, it's subtle. Going forward, we will be bringing more of those themes to the surface.

3. Increase the spectacle of the faction and their abilities. We have learned a lot since our first days working in the Unreal Engine. The Absolver has a new planned VFX effect that brings a more cosmic element to their deployed attack, ripping the souls of the damned from their bodies and drawing them into a smoldering event horizon formed by the rotating halos.

Conclusion:

As always, thank you for sharing the road with us as we take further steps to make this game and its world a reality. It really is a privilege to wake up and work on IMMORTAL for you all. It is our hope that by giving you insights into our process, our triumphs and our missteps, that we can shed light on the realities of start-up life and indie game design. no campaign is a huge mistake

The reason starcraft and warcraft got such a following and fan base was the campaign, the lore behind it in playing it and people developing interest into the characters. Without a good story a good campaign, pvp wont last infact you will miss out on alot rts player base whom only play it for campaign, even coop campaigns are popular now....

Honestly, IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre is another case, where you should really do a different game. This looks to be the usual underperformer like Stormgate, Year Of Rain or DOW3. We see frequently since Atrox and Armies of Exigo, developers try to make a homage to Blizzard games, but they perform in terms of sales quite badly. Problem is in the end of the day, you know there is a game with every aspect to be superior, better gameplay, better AI and better looks. Why would you downgrade even for free? car...
