The game’s premise is intriguing. After completing the tutorial, the unseen narrator guiding you becomes irritated because you’re simply too skilled. When you survive an encounter that was meant to kill you, the narrator snaps, resets the game, and erases your memory. The second time you enter, you remember nothing—not even your teammates’ names—and must gather clues to figure out what’s happening.

Gameplay follows a horde survival style. You fight through battle arenas, surviving until the timer runs out while leveling up. Each enemy you defeat grants experience, and leveling up mid-round lets you choose one of four stat boosts, such as increased speed, defense, or damage. Some arenas reward you with items afterward—these improve certain stats but often come with drawbacks. Fortunately, the benefits usually outweigh the penalties.

Combat revolves around controlling your sword with the mouse. The blade follows your cursor and auto-attacks when enemies get close, but strikes are limited by a cooldown, shown by two lines next to your character’s head. You may need to retreat briefly until the cooldown ends, so perks that shorten it or increase your attack lines are highly valuable.

You also have four rechargeable special attacks: a bouncing shuriken, a circular area slash for crowd control, a fireball, and a pool of acid that damages enemies passing through. However, these abilities are among the skills you forget after the reset, so you must regain them through progression.

At first, movement is possible with keyboard controls, but after the restart, you can only move toward the mouse pointer, and all actions are done via mouse input. Even menu choices—like selecting perks—require holding the cursor over an option for several seconds to confirm. Clicking mouse buttons is risky; each accidental click costs health, and five misclicks will instantly end your run and send you back to the start.

Your main objective is to clear zones—each containing multiple arenas—and collect clues. Clues unlock shortcuts and secret routes, though accessing them requires specific actions, such as crossing a river in a zigzag pattern. Progress is mostly linear, but you’ll occasionally choose between two routes, sometimes leading to extra rewards like new weapons, which then become available from the first zone in future runs. Enemies drop nothing but health pickups.

Each zone ends with a random boss battle. Defeating it unlocks that zone’s stat tracker, showing how many clues, weapons, and secrets it contains. Finding everything isn’t possible at first—you’ll need knowledge from later runs—so it’s best not to stress over 100% completion early on. Fortunately, maps and room layouts never change, and every visited room is marked on your map with an icon—circles for arenas, chests for reward rooms, and so on.
