Writers clearly should have been reined in.
The writing shows surprising lack of oversight by an editor. While there are a couple of sentences that don't quite make sense, it is really about the vocabulary. Good god, the vocabulary.

Yes, we get it, you own a thesauraus. Using obscure words might demonstrate your ability as a vocabularian, but it shows surprising lack of understanding as a writer. Writing is about conveying ideas and emotions. This cannot happen if a reader doesn't understand or relate to what you wrote. Sure, they can look up the word, but by then the added impact of a more precise word is completely lost, and all you have done is killed the reader's momentum.

I can't be alone in this thought. I am 40+ and was an avid reader. So I have to imagine if I am encountering numerous unfamiliar words, a large portion of the customer base is as well. It becomes tedious and yanks away any semblence of immersion.

Beside words who are peculiar to the universe, and there are not that much, used vocabulary doesn't sound complicated.

Any example ?

8 hours in and All i can think of is he is speaking of the Words made up for the story.

In all fairness they do not explain most of these words. They just use them, and sometimes the context of the sentence can let us imply the meaning. But just as often the word is used and I hae no idea what it means.

So in that respect. Yeah it is a little annoying. But for me it makes me curious what the etomolgy of the word is... But it would be nice if there was a codex.... Wait.. Isn't there? I coudl swear the kickstarter goal for a codex was reached... Maye I just missed it in the menus?

Anyways, beyond the new words specific to the world. I do not see many fancy words being used in this game. So I infer OP is referring to the new words, and maybe did not realize they were made up. (Read Anathem by Neal Stephenson for 2000 pages of made up words.)

No, I am not referring to fictional words. I am talking about rarely used words. It is possible you may not have noticed, as people tend to infer the meaning from unfamiliar words, or simply skim over them, if they are descriptors. But that robs the sentence of impact.

I did notice that Nychthemeron is a real word, although I was perfectly happy to believe it was a custom made neologism.

Are you saying that they've been doing that a lot more than I realised?

I am about 4 hours in and I havent seen anything thats stretching it, and I really hate when writers use big words for no reason. The only times I've found the writing to be incomprehensible is when its intentionally incomprehensible, like talking to crazy people or what not. Normally I think most RPG's are pretty horribly written, you can tell theyre written by people whos only social interaction is through books, but this one seems pretty good to me.

So you don't like reading. I get it, you don't play vidja gaems to read. Unfortunately, some of us do like reading. And we're not intimidated by big words or long sentences. Maybe a game based around reading comprehension wasn't the best idea? Get a refund and spend it on Clifford the Big Red Dog or something. You can always come back and play this game later, when you graduate from 3rd grade.

If they used simpler words people would also complain about dumbing down the game. If you don't know a word then look it up. I would never blame others for my lack of knowledge.

Interesting! I did not know this. And it means, "Night and Day" roughly, just like the creature. :steamhappy:

If you're an avid read then you shouldn't have a problem coming across words you don't know. To me the two go hand in hand and I'm not sure how someone who enjoys reading is opposed to learning more words.
