Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Ash quest broken
I can't believe they didn't name this quest "rise from the ash" or something of the sort. Anyway...

My first character saved Ash by paying a dude to switch clothes with him, and my second blazed through Hollywood without ever entering the Asp Hole. On my third, I offered to escort him through the sewers, and then I kill every single hunter, leaving the little under-construction train tunnel deserted of everyone but me and Ash. However, the game's NPC follow script seems not to include climbing an 8-foot ladder, so there seems to be no way of getting Ash to the door, which isn't openable for me. According to gamebanshee, the quest is completed by him arriving there, so it seems like it won't ever happen.

Is this fixable without use of console commands or the unofficial patch? I've been playing the Steam version of the game unadulterated, and other than occasional crashes and some failures to save, this is the first time I found myself simply trapped and unable to progress beyond an area. Do I just have to rewind #3 to an earlier save and leave Ash to his fate, or is there some trick I can use to get him up that ladder?

EDIT: Re the unofficial patch, I started playing without it, because I didn't have anything up front telling me that it was necessary, and so now I don't want to change my experience by installing it. I want to understand the game the way I have already understood it, until I'm completely done playing (which would mean going through once each with all 14 possible characters), and perhaps then I'll start over again with the patch to see what changes.

So unless I'm mistaken, you're not using any patch at all? The original reason all of the various patches were made is because the game was released in a near broken state. I think it may be possible to finish the unpatched version of the game - key word being 'maybe.' I don't think I've ever tried.

If this is the case, I would suggest installing a patch and starting over. Whichever one you like - Wesp's unofficial is the most popular, and it's very easy to install. The GOG version comes with it for a reason.

Edit: When you stand next to a character, you can sometimes make them move in the opposite direction. It's possible you can move him closer the the ladder this way. Don't quote me on that, though. I've never had this issue, and as I mentioned, I've never played the game unpatched.

Not using the Unofficial Patch for Bloodlines is one of the weirdest things you could possibly do. Unless you just like bugs for their own sake.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Aside from updating the game for modern resolutions, the unofficial patch is not necessary. I own a hard disc copy of the game, and managed to complete the game at least 10 times without having to rely on any mods or fan patches.

In fact, I actually encountered more bugs after installing the patch, than I did prior to it. Such as my furniture duplicating itself and stacking around my haven, or the computer in the Skyline Apartments being impossible to access because of an invisible wall.

You're one person. Most need the patch. The bug you had sounds like the memory leak from playing too long.

You always have these people that insist the sky is green.

The sky isn't actually blue. It's an illusion cast by the sunlight interacting with our atmosphere!

Another Ash problem is that even if he gets up the ladder, it is confusing what to do. I ran over the tracks to the other side, thinking an openable door was there, which there wasn't. Ash didn't follow and was in the middle of the tracks. So for a bit I thought I was stuck. But I just needed to run up to him when everyone's dead and he's up the ladder, and the quest completed.

Once he's up to the ladder, keep running to the end, waiting, and coming back to him. Eventually, he'll thank you and the quest ends.
