Overpriced much? [redundant thread]
UPDATE: This thread is no longer relevant. The developers responded by putting this on a nice juicy 50% sale. The game is awesome, and a sale has happened. Original post below.
_______________

Having gotten Vintage year recently, this game has become by far the oldest non early access game on my wishlist (below kryll and sublevel zero don't count as they only recently were released/came out of early access). The next oldest finished game on my wishlist is mighty switch force with a difference of 6 months.

The strongest sales so far for this game have been 30%, but really, this is a 4 hour game, how can a 4 hour game cost 15 dollars? The ratio of steam reviews to critical reviews shows clearly that the game is a commercial failure because of this price. I bought knytt underground for 4 dollars and that was a 24 hour long masterpiece.

With all this said, what is warranting the high price and stingy sales of this game?

The game is overpriced indeed.

Well, you get 2 copies of the game for 15$, so you could argue that it is a 7.50$ game.

Beyond that point, yes, it is pretty much a 4 hour game, and I guess that if game duration is very important to you, this game might not be worth it for you personnally, and that is OK. But considering that it got 98% positive reviews from Steam users, it is clear that there are a lot of people who thought it was worth it.

Also, I do not really understand how you can say that this game a) Is a commercial failure and b) ascribe that to its price.

the amount of steam reviews give a rough estimate of the amount of sales the game has. The about of reviews on the game's metatcritic entry give an estimate of the game's level of obscurity. From this data we can see this game is rather well known compared to other indie games released this year, but has barely any sales despite this. The 98% rating on steam reveals two things as well: A) the game is good, and hence the quality of the game has nothing to do with its poor sales. B) The contrast of the steam score with the metacritic score reveals that due to its pricing, only those absolutely sure of the game, bought it, and no one else did.

The inescapeable conclusion becomes: The game is a critical success but a commercial failure due to a silly 2 for 1 scheme (seriously, this is a game, not a shirt) and due to prohibitively high pricing.

Right, I see your point about the discrepancy between the amount of press attention and the number of user reviews; in fact looking at Steam Spy, I was surprised that there weren't more copies of it out, given the attention it got. Your point about the high satisfaction rate for people who bought it also makes sense with regards to the type of people who got the game.

However, I am not sure that the game would have sold that much more if it had been cheaper; people have made arguments both ways and I think the nature of a game has just as much or more to do with a person's decision to get it or not.

In any case, I found the game to be totally worth the 15$ on its own, and being able to share it with someone was quite important to me.

It always seems a bit odd to me that 15$ for a 4-ish hour piece of art/entertainment that you permanently own is generally seen as excessive whereas a 2 hour one-time experience going to the movies will probably cost you more than that and it is seen as a reasonnable price.

no, the movies are not at a reasonable price. This is why I stopped going to the movies.

I appreciate the consistency;

Well I hope you do get to try out the game when it gets on sale or on a bundle or something; I really liked it, both in its story, which is probably what you heard the most about, but also in the gameplay, which has more depths and challenges than has generally been appreciated.

If it's overprice, just wait for a price drop or in a bundle. That's what I did and what a pleasant surpise, great game.
