Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D

How did you discover Wolfenstein 3D for the first time?
For me, it was the first video game I ever played at age 4 (started off hardcore!) and my dad introduced it to me. He said that I had an unusual fascination with this "box" called a monitor as I kept tapping the screen. I guess he thought it was funny to introduce me the game. Thus, my debut to computer video games was born! Of course my mom was MAD and NOT impressed with this and ended up getting me Jumpstart learning games. It also didn't help that around this time the Columbine Shooting happened and further made her believe that shooting games will cause people to kill.

I obviously had no idea what I was doing and the moment I opened the first door out the level and got shot at by the brown shirts, it terrified me. I ended up passing this game and Spear of Destiny and went more in dept with Doom (which scared me even more, but kept playing).

Don’t remember when, but I got it on my iPhone when I was 11 years old. Funny to think about, usually people play games from the era when they’re young and get into “retro” when they’re older, but it’s almost the norm for me to play games older than myself.

My story is almost word for word the same as yours. I was about 3 years old and used to watch my dad play. Eventually, he started letting me play with him (he moved, I shot), and then I started playing on my own when I got a bit older. Went on to Spear of Destiny and Doom. Then I went on to Quake by myself because my dad stopped playing video games at around that time. Still have fond memories of this game and bought it on Steam for the nostalgia.

The first time I saw Wolfenstein 3D is when my dad was playing it. Computers back in the 90's still used the Dosbox settings. He would put in a code on a black screen to upload the game. I thought it was fascinating and how you can get any game to come up on a black screen. When I saw the Wolfenstein 3D game, I was astonished. Never actually played it though when I was younger, until I was able to get it off here from Steam. Of course my mom would shoo me off when he played those violent games, but I would sneak behind him when is not looking while my mom was either out somewhere or taking a nap in their bedroom.

I have very fond memories playing Wolf3D sitting on my Dad's lap when I was young.
It was something we did together. <3

I have been playing PC games since the mid 90s. My first shooters were Doom, Quake, Half-Life etc. Just never played anything that came out before Doom. I knew about Wolfenstein 3D just never got to it. I have been blessed by the Gods with the ability to play any game from any year without caring much about dated graphics or mechanics regardless of whether I played it before or not. Recently I have been making a habit of playing popular PC games from the 90s I never got to play. It took 30 years but I finally got to play Wolf 3D which I am currently playing.

I discovered the secrets maps in Doom 2 Hell on Earth and was curios about the swastikas, Nazis, and hanging pale kids at the end. After searching on the internet i discovered Wolfenstein 3D and after that I bought the game and it's prequel on steam. Love both of the games. Looking forward to playing later Wolfenstein games like Return To Castel Wolfenstein but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I was 12 years old when this came out in 1992 and the 3.5" floppy was THE hot trade on the school yard given the fact that it was banned in Germany. We always locked the doors of our rooms when playing, so the parents would not be able to sneak up upon us. Fast forward 30 years and you can finally own it legally. I still like to come back to the grand father of first person shooters from time to time because mowing down nazis never get's old:)

Well, I'm sure some have heard this before..

After playing Kommander Keen - to death, and then the same with Catacombs the Abyss
I was following Apogee Software closely to see what was coming down the pike and found
the demo of the first ten levels of Wolf3D prior to release.

- This was exactly like the game that me and my buds would play in the back alleys and
empty tenements of New York City when I was 8 or 10 yrs old. - We just had our cap pistols,
but the tension of opening doors, easing around corners and being caught off guard,
ambushed and suddenly surrounded was a thrill.

- I had just turned 43 and was completely hooked.

At the time I was working about 100 yards from my apartment so I'd ride my 10 speed
bike to work every day and on my lunch hour would race home to play Wolf; Often
forgetting my lunch entirely.

Ended up building 10 massive levels for the game, and of course started to follow id
Software of Jon Romero, American McGee and company. Building 50 single and multi-
player co-op and death match levels for Doom and Doom2.

- I often revisit those. they're still great fun. No cutscenes, no hud clutter, no skill trees
or any distractions or interruptions from game play. - Just pure unadulterated fun.

Most modern games it seems have muddied the waters with their added 'features'.

Far Cry 2 is the only 'modern' FPS (now 15 years old) that still has that freedom
and purity.

- Thanks for the post ! 8 )

I found a download link for Beyond Wolfenstein 2: Special Edition on a website that had lots of flash games for kids back in 2001 or 2002,when I was around 10 years old. Played a few levels and than forgot about the game because I couldn't find the exit to the next level.

Then I read about the story of Id software and the games they made in a book called High Score! when I was in junior high school and found wolf3d and Doom on a Doom forums site.

I can't remember exactly how I discovered Wolfenstein 3D for the first time to be completely honest. I know I rented & played the SNES version of it at some point and circa 1997/1998 when I was in the 6th grade a classmate let me borrow his Wolfenstein 3D floppy disk to install the game on my then relatively new PC. I do know the first FPS I discovered was Doom because my best friend in 2nd grade circa 1993/1994 had it and showed it to me one night when we had a sleepover at his house. I had another good friend in the 4th grade who had Heretic and thus that was another early FPS I discovered. Anyway, because my family didn't get our first PC until 1997, the first FPS I actually owned was the SNES version of Doom (with a distinct red cartridge) which I received as a gift for my birthday or Christmas. Not sure of the exact year, but it most likely would've been at some point after that when I discovered Wolfenstein 3D. Playing Wolfenstein 3D (& Doom) eventually got me really interested in some of the earlier FPS games; in particular id Software's predecessor to Wolfenstein 3D, Catacomb 3-D and its sequels (it's a shame the Catacomb games aren't on Steam), as well as the Blake Stone games, Corridor 7: Alien Invasion, Operation Body Count, Hexen: Beyond Heretic & Rise of the Triad. And of course I would also really get into the Build Engine FPS games, particularly Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior, and eventually what became probably my favorite FPS from the 1990s; Blood.

It's been quite a few years since I played Wolfenstein 3D & Spear of Destiny, but I recently bought them on sale in the Wolf Pack bundle along with Return to Castle Wolfenstein & Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. So I'll be rectifying that in the near future.
