The mercenaries are pretty dumb, you can crouch walk to remain hidden from them quite easily, really it's a matter of learning the environment and where the mercs tend to be, once you kill a single one of them and get the assault rifle it becomes very easy.
Then they changed it so they couldn't spot you so easy. They also made it so you wouldn't alert every enemy. Then on top of that they also provided you with weapons much sooner then before.
Unless they changed it again last time I played it when they made the changes. It was far easier, so if your having a hard time. Likely your being way to impatient trying to rush through it. Think the Devs even changed the enemy patrol movement patterns.
They originally walked around alot on patrol, there was even a closet you were suppose to hide in. To wait for them to pass you so could sneak by them.
Last I played it they were alot easier to get by and pick off one by one.
The chase can be quite frustrating, if you don't collect the energy drink or know about the final shortcut door near the end. You pretty much need both to beat it on anything or than easy consistently.
I do agree though, that segment could maybe use a tweak just to make the door more obvious, maybe having it already be open could help guide players or have Jodi say something about it, currently it's very easy to miss and going around often gets you killed.
How to explain it, during the chase sequence you run from one room past the first group of zombies, in the second room with another group there is a door, at the far back left, opposite side of the corner you're probably running around, this door cuts through the area directly towards the escape vent, it is always quicker to use this door instead of going around the corner.
Pretty sure the monster smashes it's way through that door when the player rounds the corner, so it catches up quite quickly if you go around.
First shot, shows the room the door is in, ignore the brightly lit corner to the right and instead hug the left hand wall.

Second shot shows the door up close, dunno why I bothered with this one, I assume most people know what a door is, but it's kinda dark so you might miss it I guess.

Third and fourth shots show each side of the door, as you exit you'll see the vent, turn around and you might see the monster. It was pretty close to me as I was fooling around in photo mode trying to capture how it goes that way.

Hopefully that helps somewhat to anyone who didn't know about this shortcut. It's not super essential but by far the easiest way to pass that section on the higher difficulties.
