Why this game never had a sequel?
The dlc 'vergil's downfall' ended in a cliffhanger where he was shown leading an army of demons into the surface world but we never got a sequel for this game. The main reason for not having a sequel because the storyline for the sequel will essentially be a repeat of DMC 3: Dante's Awakening. In DMC 3 the storyline was vergil was leading an army of demons into the surface world with the help of arkhum and the temenegru tower. Dante eventually put a stop to his demon invasion.

Thats the main reason for not having a sequel because the storyline would have been a repeat of DMC 3.

The main reason is simple actually. The reboot is trash, that's about it.

Itsuno seems to disagree

The reboot was trash because they did not preserve the core elements and characteristics of the characters. In this game dante is a complete di.ck, vergil is a pu.ssy and trish is a teenager.

But the reason for not having a sequel is because of the reasons I listed above.

Itsuno directed DMC5, and thats the difference between them, DMC5 is a succes and the DmC reboot its simply trash ;)

He made a game with large inspiration from DmC and full of references, Vergil pulls out DmC Doppelganger as the hype moment of the final boss fight, DMC6 will go the same route if Itsuno keeps directing, I think I'll trust the director's opinion :DMCDante:

you say that they didn't make a sequel because it would have repeated the events in DMC3, the reboot has no connection with the original series. If the reboot would've been a hit they would have made a sequel even if the story repeated the same as in DMC3 as you say (the again, its not connected to the originals). But in the end the reboot was bad and people dind't like it so thats about it.

Yes, in DMC5 you can see a reflection of some aspects of the reboot, such as the action in combat and vergil's doppelganger as you say. thats one thing the reboot did right, the combat and action. I also trust Itsuno's direction, I think that with him directing, DMC6 will be even better than 5.

I feel like 5 dropped the ball on combat.
Color coded enemies and flow chart combos that ask very little of the player, a lack of lock-on and the bosses being big set pieces with no ability to combo.

It is no reboot it is a "reimagining of the series, with the same protagonist Dante, but set in an alternate universe." (Quote from Moby Games: https://www.mobygames.com/game/59494/dmc-devil-may-cry/ )

The Game itself is very good. Even the press had mostly good things to say about the title. See Moby Games link under Critics (Average score: 85%).

A sequel was in the works, but was cancelled two weeks before alpha status:
