It is a great time waster. Funny little game with a lot of strategy. IT is more challenging than most modern strategy games leaning towards game mechanics and hard challenges rather than PVP to make it harder.
APM does play a minor role, but not as much as modern games.
Each mission has multiple ways to do it. To get the bonus objectives you really need to think and alter you play style.

Just an FYI Easy mode shows you planet health for enemies and provides a warning of where the enemy will hit you. It only has one objective.
Medium shows you enemy planet health, but no warning. It has 2 objective.
Hard mode hides enemy planet health and no alarm. It has 3 objectives. The objectives oftentimes serve as hints at a better faster way to finish the mission
On a side note as you progress through the campagin they unlock other things you need to worry about.
Money effects power and effectivness of ships. What kind of planet do you want? A bank? A cannon? A good old fashiond ship planet?
It makes for a very nice strategic experience.

Simple real time strategy. Manage the resources population and money. try to conquer your enemies with Risk (boardgame) army mechanics, only that it's not turnbased so you need to micromanage. You learn this game in 30 minutes.
