Official Fix for GFWL issue from Capcom support
I contacted Capcom support about the GFWL issue and they sent me this link. I downloaded and installed this and the game is now playable for me (it would crash on launch before), hopefully I can help others. This should be pinned since it is an official fix.

Since the game wouldn't even install GFWL for me, all I had to do was install this. I should also mention I'm on windows 10. Some of you may need to follow what they said and go through the steps as mentioned.

Thanks for contacting Capcom USA Customer Support. We’re sorry to hear about the issue you are experiencing with Resident Evil 5 on PC / Steam. If the game crashes at launch, or you have issues logging into your Live profile or saving, it's generally due to an incompatible Games for Windows Live (GFWL) file system installed with the game.

While Resident Evil 5 has made the transition from GFWL to Steamworks, the game still requires the basic install of GFWL for save transfer purposes. Please follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Go to Control Panel > Programs & Features

Find the following Programs and uninstall them:

Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable

Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace

Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant (if this is not installed, skip this part)

Go to Program Files and ensure that no Games for Windows Live or Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant folders remain. If there are existing folders/files, delete them.

Navigate to C:\\Users
(your user name)\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft
GFWLive and delete this folder, if present.

Download and install these programs to the C:
drive, and ensure that Steam and Resident Evil 5 are also installed on the C:
drive:

GFWL Redistributable:

GFWL Marketplace:

http://download.gfwl.xboxlive.com/content/gfwl-public/redists/production/gfwlclient.msi

Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant (Only needed if using Windows 7) :

Run each of these programs as an administrator by right-clicking on the launcher and selecting "Run as an administrator".

Log in with your Xbox / GFWL ID

Launch Resident Evil 5. If it still does not open, try running the game’s .exe in administrator mode.

How is it any better than Maluchs patch, that also fixes a whole lot of issues ?

I didn't say it was better, I said it's a fix issued by Capcom themselves. Which means it is safer to download than some random fix from some random person. Maybe "Maluchs" patch is safe, maybe it isn't. I'd prefer the fix came from the people that made the game, and I know that I'm not the only person that thinks this way. If you prefer to take the risk, by all means do so.

thank you for sharing this, but official fix would have been if they actually patched the game and removed GFWL dependency, as well as fixing other numerous issues and bugs of Steam port

...or better yet, how about adding all those changes they done for re-release? like better FOV and combined mercenaries modes?

it is also a weird thinking by Capcom - "what? you bought our game and it doesn't work properly? then how about you visit Microsoft site and download some random file from here and put into your in-game folder"

to be honest, I trust some random people who put time and efforts into fixing developer's wrongdoings (and doing it for years and still address people's complains) - trust them MORE than a shady American company who is doing a terrible OSs for decades and is known for being a j@ckass, and Japanese videogame company who can't fix their own game for 6+ years already =)

I agree, I think the game should be pulled from the store until it is properly patched by Capcom, it does make them look bad. At the very least Capcom support should have made this post themselves on here and had it pinned. Unfortunately, since this has been an issue for years this is probably the best we'll get.

I should mention that they did recently pull Operation Raccoon City from steam for this same issue until they fix it, so it is possible they will do the same for this.

i dont know how to save threads so thats why imma just write a comment sofar no fixes worked for me i reinstalled re5 several times for the reason so i can try several versions of fixes im furious i love re5 and played it for years over several consoles now i wanna experience it via pc and cant cuz of fckng windowslive im so extremely mad about that fact that capcom dont do ♥♥♥♥ about it I KNOW its and old game but a beloved one

LMAO official fix you cant request weapon on your partner also you get region lock and etc. better you using community patch for get better experience playing re5

The fact that you have to install abandonware to get this game to work despite of GFWL being replaced with Steamworks is simply put unacceptable. Its much better to avoid that software altogether and use the modded exe.
Ever since i reinstalled Windows i never installed GFWL again and the modded game works fine.

It's a fix if you just want to play the game as intended, modding is a whole different ball game.

The fact that you're clearly mad that i posted this (then link your own "fix") makes me even more skeptical of so called "mods / community fixes", I don't trust that every modder has good intentions.

I should have known that posting this for a game that has about 500 people that still play it (according to steam) would make some people angry though, lol. At least I was able to help a few people, that makes me happy.

because Steam-version of the game is still bugged regardless of using that fix

even is you will use that fix from Capcom - enemy still wouldn't drop crane key in 6-1 (because of rigged pathfinding) making that level unbeatable, unless you know how to skip that segment completely which is out of scope for novice players and all seasoned players already do use Maluc's or Rick's fixes

with that fix installed there are still will be broken lights, black outlines around models, wrong country flags in lobby, bugs in Desperate Escape, wrong meshes for stars in Lost if Nightmare, etc

that fix only helps to start the game without addressing other major issues. that's the point and why people are against that fix. because what the point of using it if player still will be softlocked in chapter 6-1 because crane key didn't drop?

- hey, guys, my game doesn't work
- install official fix by capcom
- but I can't beat one level
- yeah, then install unofficial fix that has the same features as official fix, but also fixes other stuff and makes game more polished

why not to cut the chase then and install unofficial fix that has been around for 6+ years already. if you don't want to use it - good for you

except you dont need to fix that bug with keycard in 6-1.... all you have to do is shoot that button that lifts container 2 more times to make enemy's pathfinding to work. and its well known fix since '09.
so that unofficial patch is not necessary

Maluk's patch has remastered camera FOV and shadows, and some other fixes. It's perfectly safe I just did it a week ago. And you don't have to mess with GFWL. If you want to install GFWL then do this patch.
