Thief™ II: The Metal Age

Thief™ II: The Metal Age

I'm not really enjoying Thief 2 as much as Thief 1
I've played and replayed Thief 1 since 1998 so it always holds a special place in my heart. Everyone says Thief 2 is even better, I've watched full playthroughs of it and thought it seemed a little worse than Thief 1 in a lot of ways. The lighting is much worse (to try and force the new flare items), I don't actually like the map design as much and I'm missing the vs. monster missions like Bonehorde. I just finished Ambush and I'm really tired of the game already. What is it about this game specifically verses Thief 1 that you like more? Help me see what you see in this game because I'm not feeling it.

I stopped comparing both and I just sort of appreciate what both is trying to accomplish, so I won't say that which is better, which I want to replay OM I just start from TG, when I play FM sometimes I pick one closer to T2 feel, sometimes I just want to go tomb raiding.

For me, T2 is the sequel that essential blew open a whole new world of possibilities: it's trying to veer off from Arthurian Tales inspired old self into a more conspiratorial steampunk thriller, and the contrast and difference from the first game actually synergize well together and enhances world building with its overarching theme.

Tie that in with the map design we see more of The City's civil infrastructure, as in Shipping and Receiving, Framed, First City Bank and Trust and somewhat reached its climax in Life of the Party. It's a nice contrast of T1's many arcane / underbelly locations like forgotten tombs, mages, Constantine's manor, the Maw...The Mechanists hides their sinister intention in plain sight with immense civil reach.

It's sad that LGS closed its door before T2 Gold finishes, since "Waking the Dead" will be a level about Necromancers, and I don't think I have enough of them in The Black Parade and I kinda wish FM authors could shake the perception that horror levels won't do well.

After beating it and then replaying it again on Expert, I can see what people love about this game. It has some really outstanding missions like Framed, Bank and Trust, Blackmail and Life of the Party. Even the more mediocre missions were pretty good like Cargo, and as much as I didn't like Casing the Joint, it could've been very good if it was just replaced with Masks as Masks was fun. It's still not as good as the first game for me, but I do appreciate it and felt it lived up to the original in a lot of ways. Soulforge though was awful, but I won't hold it against it because I know how rushed the game was and how bad the dev crunch time was, and the rest of the game makes up for it.

I haven't really noticed any differences between Normal and Expert, though. In the first game, different parts of the map actually changed which usually made it more dangerous and made otherwise inaccessible items and loot accessible. In this game, it only seems to add loot requirements and a few more enemies, but all the "special loot" still seems to be there.

Thief 1/Gold was the rounder game for me, and also had the better story. But, Thief II is hardly worse. It's a slightly different flavour, replacing the Trickster and undead with Karras and machines. I like them both. The universe and lore is one of the best, if not THE best in all video games.

Thief II, of course, has some technical improvements over Thief 1.
havent touched either in some years, but what I remember most is they had a different feel, and I think 2 expanded on the machanics somewhat. Am I remembering right?

I dont remember if I finished the first one, but the 2nd one seemed to have a bigger more fantasy oriented story than the first one.

Yes, pretty much.

No, not really. 😉
Whats good about Thief 2 campaign is that unlike TDP it is less about tomb raiding, and more about the actual thief jobs. Like, explore the city, not caverns.

Whats bad is that it is boring, bland and soooo long, like Metallica '88. I would love to replay Life of the Party though - the absolute pinnacle, traversing the rooftops and stuff. But the very thought of replaying Soulforge, or even Shipping and Receiving is ugh :slugcatdead:

I actually love the "tomb raiding" of Thief 1 in addition to the "actual thief jobs." Bone Horde and Return to the Cathedral are some of my all time favorite missions.

I also love Shipping and Receiving. It's fun using the different codes to get everything. The Thief 2 missions I'm not the biggest fan of are Ambush and the one where you're trailing the letter carriers, as well as Casing the Joint.

Indeed, loads of good missions in Thief Gold.

And, the only filler kind of mission I found in Thief II was Casing the Joint.

They're both great games, with great missions.

You missed tailing the courier and kidnapped and maybe ambush. None of those missions are interesting to play. Metal age always had some of the best and most forgettable missions.

Your opinion.

Guess you could make an argument for kidnapped. But tailing the courier is a boring level that could have been summarized in a cutscene.

Unpopular opinions of mine here, I have somewhat good memories of Tailing the Courier mission, as well as Ambush. I loved to explore The City streets a bit, yet I didn't really like this job in TDP Assassins mission. Maybe i'd even replay these of T2 one day.

Then again, cant say Casing the Joint is my favorite. It feels broken af, but i consider it special in a good way, because it basically introduces you to the ghosting concept. I didn't know that word back in the day, but I appreciated the assignment. Back then I had to play a bootleg copy of T2 featuring a translation so botched that I couldn't really understand the main objective of the mission so I decided i'll figure it out on my way (I am about to steal the mask, r-right?). I even invested enormous efforts to sneak to the 3rd floor and back down (expecting I have to steal something from up there) :Hand_Garrett:. I even struggled and succeeded to walk out through the front door (actually it was getting though the window iirc) to the gates in the end, and got surprised it doesnt counts as leaving the place. I had to search for a walkthrough and got a bit pissed that the mission was actually so much simpler than I had made it up for myself. Nonetheless, in hindsight I enjoyed that experience. Luring the ghost :spooky: out of the library and seeing it wreaking havok among the guards was funny too. Anyway I totally do not look forward to replay it.

Ambush being a big city level is okay, not much besides the streets and tailing is just the same map with less to do but following someone for what takes max 9-10 min to finish.

Casing would be fine if there was a mission or 2 to break it up. Since Masks is just the same level with actual objectives your playing the same level twice.

while casing the joint is clearly weird, masks is just generic and non-remarkable. i'd rather have masks omitted.

It has enemies for Mask also the objective is to get Karass device, it has an actual purpose. Casing the joint is getting a feel for a location before the break in. Maybe if it was combined into a level it would work better. As it stands they're just the same map reused back to back.
