I can't change the layout, I've read a few threads about making the controller work. Do all of you not have the Xbox controller prompt on the screen?

Going to start playing the game tomorrow. it seems there's a lot of issues with controls of this game? Should I play with mkb since this is a shooter game or is a controller preferred? what do I need to do to ensure a smooth experience with either?
