wtf is up with the s#!t controls ? this is one of the most beautiful pos ive ever played... i mean what exactly was wrong with any of the arcade classics? like double dragon, shinobi, or tekken? why did the devs not stick to tried and true solutions for controlling your character on screen. ive played each character, my biggest gripe is why they made the dual button presses across from each other? thats like how tekken expects ya to be able to press square and circle with out pressing the buttons that are ...

Can you feel it? We're merely DAYS away from Diesel Legacy's launch, where you'll be able to team up and brawl against the rest of the world using 10 playable characters. But that's just the beginning! We've got a metric ton of content on launch, and more to come on the way.

Launch Features

Diesel Legacy launches as a COMPLETE GAME (shocker to anyone who has played video games in 2024) with a ton of bells and whistles.

Here's what you can expect on Day 1.

10 Playable Fighters

Rory, Ruby, Fritz, Rotwang, Eleanora, Nyra, Dieselmech, Damkina-- with newcomers Saga and Adrik will be playable on DAY ONE! Each character has their own unique archetype that can't be explained so easily. The best way to find out who fits best is to try them all!

Day 1 Patch Content:

Fritz: Debuffer, Trickster
Rotwang: Flight, Burn
Eleanora: Projectile-Range, Assists

Versus Mode

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

Pick up your gauntlets and start swinging! Fill up the match with local or online friends, enemies, or CPUs. Best part is that you can play online even with multiple local players! This mode will allow you to choose stages and make match customizations.

Online Matchmaking

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

Match with ANYONE across the WORLD and play in either 2v2 or Free-For-All. Our RealMatch rollback will ensure you get the most premium gameplay experience no matter what! (As a fighting game fan, I need to say while the game handles Wi-Fi just fine, please use a hard connection if possible.)

Online Private Lobbies

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

Need to quickly join a buddy or running an online tournament? Our extremely simple lobby system makes it so anyone can pop in a short code and automatically join a customizable lobby.

In addition, lobbies will also work joining any other mode. Everything is possible!

Training Mode

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

The ultimate training mode! Complete with tons of match modifiers, frame data, frame data bars, save states, shortcuts and everything else you've ever wanted to lab a game-- you'll find it here.

Story Mode

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

Immerse yourself in Diesel Legacy's universe with our full fledged Story Mode. This mode comes complete with all 10 playable characters with their own unique story content, as everyone fights for the fate of the Iron City! This mode includes some unique challenges that you won't find anywhere else.

Arcade Mode

Local and Online Multiplayer OK!

Instead of waiting, say 3 years, after launch-- we've got a staple to the fighting game experience on day one! Face match after match in a tower-style gauntlet to get the high score!

To reiterate, you can play Co-Op with a friend online or offline to chase the top ranks!

Replays / Live Spectator

Any match you play, you can go back and watch with rewind and pause features. Best yet, you'll be able to do "Takeover Mode" which will allow you to play back everyone's inputs and take over a character to see what you could've done better.

You'll also be able to watch any current online match going on-- even if you're joining in late!

Player Ranking

If you win a match and an internet ranking doesn't show a bar filling up, did you really win? Yes, but a little more incentive might help!

Player Rankings will increase per win, also increasing your ranking each time. Can you become the Master of Iron City? You'll have a lot of competition ahead of you. Kick, scratch, explode your way to the top.

Leaderboards

Compare yourself and dominate your friends, and then, THE WORLD! Check your rankings with both ranking and arcade score.

Various Unlockables & Achievements

Unlock different color schemes with each character by various means! For Achievement/Trophy Hunters, you'll have a blast exploring all the different modes.

In a time when fighting games strive towards optimization of profit and standardization, it is refreshing to see bold games like this one.

Fighting games are alive.

After you get the hang of how lane-switching works, the game gets a lot more fun.

From what I have played, the strongest avenue for fun in this game is the fluidity in cooperation opportunities you can have with your teammate.

When you have a basic grasp of how the combo system works, you can start to make routes on the fly.

Here is an example of on-the-fly cooperation; this was not labbed, and I don't know the Rory player.

Fluid cooperation isn't limited to offensive scenarios; once you die, you can still help your teammate by doing a parry, a combo-breaking burst, and your specials as a classic assist.

The game has some rough ends and could use a better structured tutorial, but the posibilities of in depth fun makes it worth it.

It's Skullgirls: Isuka. If you like the sound of that the game is probably for you.

Diesel Legacy feels like a breath of fresh air for the genre, not just for its lane system and four-player team battles but for how inventive a lot of characters are. Move lists in this game are smaller than some fighters but the moves characters do have, including some of their normals, can be very off-the-wall and set a unique niche for the character in the genre.

Right now I've been playing Adrik, a magician who shares one set of normals for standing, crouching and jumping, has a free flight mode, a nonstandard dash and multiple very unique supers including one that can steal the opponent's soul, and then packages all that weirdness with very functional teleports, traps and projectiles that he stocks up and then can use freely. You could compare his teleports and traps to a character like TFH's Oleander of GBVS's Cagliostro, and you could compare his unique resource management to Street Fighter's Menat or MVC2's Spiral, but despite these trappings he doesn't play like any character I've ever seen before. Most characters in the game could be described along these lines.

The game also has a full story mode for every character, set in a striking dieselpunk metropolis, and complete with unique NPC characters to fight and multiple bosses, to give the player some worthwhile single-player content. The devs have stated they plan on adding more single-player and couch co-op features in the future, and I'm looking forward to that.

The training mode is mostly functional but admittedly a bit bare, lacking combo trials or a recording function for the dummy. Combo trials are said to be coming in the first patch and I will update my review when they're added. While there's improvement to be made there, the replay system is fantastic, featuring visible hitboxes, a frame-by-frame viewer that lets the player rewind and fast forward, and a replay takeover feature. With how chaotic matches can get while all four players are alive, this is essential to understanding niche interactions in the game, and I'm glad they took the time to polish it.

Overall, despite its minor present shortcomings, what is here in Diesel Legacy feels great, and with the devs wanting to greatly expand it post-launch I expect any issues I have with it to get ironed out. I highly recommend the game. There's a free demo with three characters and even private lobby matches between other demo players, so there's no barrier to trying the game out for yourself.

When a game is made with love, it shows. This game was made with a lot of love. For one reason or another, I don't suspect this game will take off popularity-wise, so if that is a big deal for you maybe don't pick it up. Otherwise, this game delivers in any regard you could reasonably expect from a game like it. The presentation is second to none, gameplay is innovative and incredibly fun, a lot of considerations were made for casual and more competitive players to be able to enjoy the game with any level of investment. Can't recommend this game enough.

How to properly handle a Dieselmech player

Laggy Matches. Nothing but Red bars connections.

Is anyone else getting laggy matches? Everyone I play against has red bars and players stutter everywhere in battle. My connection is fine on any other game. Spectating matches runs fine but doing a online match goes to ♥♥♥♥.
