This might be the case. I think, for my horror experiences, I just need a little more than just the more or less "imaginary threat" of a yellow painted kinda endless floor.

Tried "inside the backrooms" myself. Cant say i'd recommend it. Plus the dev for it has been real snobby when it comes to constructive criticism.
I mention the screen shots though because I'm seeing other levels of the Backroom. There is that pool level and another screenshot of that suburban area, not sure if that is the same as Level 0.
edited to add: I just saw a walkthrough video so it looks like there is multiple levels like the poolroom and that dark night suburban area. I think a lot of us gamers have just been desensitized. I bet this experience will feel much differently with VR, plus maybe some mechanic that makes us think or feel like there *could* be something around.
