Game force exits to desktop when I launch it because it detects accessibility programs that I need to use to play games as "cheat software" The fact that they are going this far to lock out disabled players just too stop "cheating" in a game that's mostly played singleplayer when there's already exploits baked into the game is quite frankly stupid.

A legendary RTS game that is better than any age of empires

Well, what should I say about AoM Retold? It's the glorious, never forgotten ol' AOM...but better from every point of view of course.

Best RTS of 2024 for sure, one of the best AoE ever imho (at least regarding the fun factor). If you loved the original AoM and/or RTS in general, do yourself a favour and buy this.

PS. As time goes by, I understand why they keep on remaking/remastering games nowadays...old games were just better.

If you want an RTS, get this game. If you have already bought one of the other editions, I'd probably wait for a sale unless you're absolutely dying to play competitively or something. Game looks great though.

I have loved all the Age of Empires games. They have made up a huge part of my childhood. The new editions of the older games, however, have left much to be desired. Age of Mythology: Retold is no different. The game is far too buggy at the moment. In a normal battle (where I am controlling the villagers), I am able to beat the game on the hardest difficulty setting. When using the presets in the campaign, however, it is not uncommon that I find half of my workers standing around idle. If I give them a command, they will complete the command, then continue to stand around without any further attempts to collect resources. If I reset/change the preset, the villagers will sometimes start working again, but, very shortly thereafter, stop again and go idle. Trying to play the campaign without presets is also a joke, due to overly developed enemies that attack almost immediately. I have even installed the classic version in order to compare and have none of the same issues with the campaign. Until presets are fixed, don't waste your time unless you plan to only play PvP matches you intend to micromanage.

Retold brings significant improvements to the original AOM, already one of the best games ever made.

Sadly, the new graphics make the Retold inferior to the original and to most other RTS. This is not about style or looks, but about usability.

For an RTS to be playable, you need to be able to tell the units apart at a glance. In the old AOM every unit looked completely different. In an instant you would know that you are looking at an army made of 3 hoplites, 4 hypaspists and 3 toxotes.

Now they chose a more realistic style, all of them wear the same kind of armor. It looks nice, has way more detail and all sorts of shinning parts that make it even harder to distinguish (add effects and fog on top of that). Even if you pause the game and look for 2-3 seconds it's not clear what you are looking at. Makes it unplayable unless you're in exclusively for the most basic experience.

The pathing is also weird. You can have instances when multiple soliders all sit in the same spot, superimposed. Sometimes units simply don't have mass or volume, they can just pass through other units. This leads to bad gameplay and makes it even harder to see properly what is happening. I hope pathing will get better with time but at this moment it's quite bad. Still, it's the graphics that make it unplayable.

My review will stay negative, unless a choice of using old graphics is added (or any another solution that would make the game easier to read). Most of the times you don't really know what you are looking at, or what exactly is happening.

The causal player base is already dead. The game has been out for months but there's still no rating system for open lobby players. The only rating system is the competitive non-auto queue system which is a fundamentally different game. Predictably, no one in the open lobby has a rank. Even the Extended Edition didn't have this problem. Balancing teams is therefore impossible and the open lobby is a ghost town. There's fewer games you can join in the Retold open lobby now than there were in Extended Edition before the Retold release. How does a PvP game in 2024 not have a practical rating system? I can't think of any PvP game in any genre where 90%+ of the player base doesn't have a rating or any sort of skill indication.
