So... the mouse works on the menu screen. I click "new game". Arrow keys, wasd, and numpad do nothing. Spacebar successfully tells it to go to the next piece of dialogue in conversation, so I manage to finish the conversation between Prom and the superintendant. After that, the mouse cursor never reappears / becomes available. Keyboard continues doing nothing. Not sure how to proceed....

I know to hit E on the PC to get into the spell casting screen, but there aren't any hints anywhere about what combinations of ingredients make which spells. I don't even see a guide here for that.
