Black borders solved by "native" resolution, any way to make native resolution the default?
I just got my Dock, connected it to a fairly normal 1080p TV, went through the software updates. More or less all games run in a "window" centered on the TV with big black borders. It seems the dock feeds the TV 1080p, but the games think "fullscreen" is 780p and the result is a centered square with huge black borders. In the in-game settings 780p is the max.

So, I found out that one can go into the steam settings for every specific game where one can set the resolution between "default", "native", and a bunch of specific resolution settings; and "native" always does the trick so the game runs in 1080p in fullscreen.

Am I missing something? -- why isn't "native" already the default? Is there a way to change the default to "native" so I don't have to set it on every game? I've gone through the global external screen resolution options, and nothing seems to do the trick.

Ditto. The first thing I do when buying things is always to flip the res to Native. It appears to do no harm when rendering to the internal screen, though I suppose some games that expect the res never to change might get confused.

Indeed, it would make so much more sense if "Native" was the default, and this setting was used for individual games that for some reason cannot handle that.

Native isn't the default as renderinf FHD is way more demanding, than rendering HHD and the Deck's already kinda strained for resources. And suddenly losing half of your performance isn't exactly an easy sell, especially for console-minded folk whom the Deck is also kinda directed at. That said, you can use a 16:9 resolution without losing half of your performance. If you care about that half, that is. Plants vs .Zombies wouldn't care if you half or quarter your Deck's performance.

"HalfHD" and "FullHD" aren't made up, my dear.

720p is HD, no clue what are you talking about with made-up nonsense like "HalfHD"

While digging this one up, I found that I have no clue why I should put up with that infantile hostility.

Presumably "Native" doesn't render at 1080p to the internal screen ever, though?

That wouldn't be native. If you want a specific non-native resolution, don't pukc "native", pick that resolution.

native will limit gamescope resolution to the currently used display.
