[Fixed] Steam Deck crashes into Verifying Installation when playing Just Cause 3
Just Cause 3 crashes randomly into Verifying Installation screen.
When relaunching the game right after a crash, the game crashes much sooner.
Seems to happen after some time has passed after i change in-game settings or envoke the steam overlay whilst in-game.
This started happening ever since i updated my SteamOS to 3.5 via Stable Channel.

Currently on latest stable SteamOS 3.5.7(i believe)
I use the default proton selected by valve for this game
Steam Deck is the 64GB model unmodified
The game is from Steam and is unmodified

-------------------------------------
Edit:

The game now crashes into Verifying Installation if i set the frame rate limiter to 30fps60hz in the Quick Access Menu (...)
The crash occurs after 5-20minutes of gameplay.
If i set the limit to 60fps60hz the game does not crash and runs fine.

Running the game at a 60fps limit is a problem for me because the framerate fluctuates all the time in this game which makes me feel nauseous after playing for more than 40 minutes.

Currently on the latest Stable SteamOS 3.5.19

I tried using these versions of proton:
Proton 7.0-6
Proton 8.0-5
Proton 9.0-1
Proton Experimental

No other settings are enabled in the Quick Access Menu
I have also tried Hard Rebooting Steam Deck and a Memory Retrain Bootup.
I have the full suite of Crash Reports enabled in Steam Deck system settings.

Edit:

The issue has been resolved as of Steam Client version 1719259903 on Stable SteamOS 3.5.19 (OS Build 20240422.1) running the game using Proton 9.0-2

If updating does not fix the crashing issue for you, i recommend performing a factory reset on your Steam Deck.

Some people stated they have success with GE Proton aka glorious eggroll proton.

You can try to use older version of proton which matches steam os 3.4, but I do not know the original Just Cause proton version.

thank you.

the version of proton is the same for 3.4.11 and 3.5.7

from what i can gather, this is not a game crash but instead a SteamOS crash (gamescope) as mentioned in other posts

The game is crashing. Gamescope is just a DE to run games. Verifying installation tend be incorrect error. The most likely issue is an application crash.

Well whatever it is, i'm not so sure it's proton. I have tried Experimental but got the same crash, made no difference.

Hes wrong, its an amdgpu driver crash which is crashing the game and in turn crashing Gamescope. This bug is affecting many different games and many people, and it did start with the update to 3.5 (which i can personally verify). Valve knows about it, but they dont seem very close to figuring it out.

Unless we are talking about Mesa bits crashing which unlikely, AMD kernel driver crashing is rather catastrophic. You freeze the whole system. Application crashing is rather common for gamescope. Verify installation can be DRM issues etc.

Here's some additional behavior that i've observed:

After the crash (veryfying installation followed by the boot video and return to homescreen) if i jump back into the game, it will crash soon enough. It is only a matter of time.

If instead i reboot Steam Deck and then launch the game WITHOUT EVER invoking any steam overlay during gameplay, the game seems to run without a problem, no crashing.

I should further mention that i have locked the game to 30fps 60hz with Allow Tearing enabled and a TDP limit of 8-10(still testing)
If i wish to change any of these parameters i.e. TDP Limit, i have to invoke the steam overlay, make my changes and then quit the game, restart Steam Deck and go back into the game where i DO NOT EVER invoke the steam overlay.

Will report back after i see wether this "never opening" steam overlay actually does prevent crashing or not.

Yea. You should report that to Steam OS issues.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues

Remember to list your client and OS version numbers. Overlay is userspace crashes.

Right so here what i've found from further testing:

It seems like the cause for the "Verifying Installation" crash is linked to the TDP limit being enabled.

If i disable TDP Limit completely, the game no longer crashes into the "Verifying Installation" screen no matter what i do.

With TDP Limit enabled however( tested with 8w 9w and 10w) it seems like invoking any SteamOS UI at all ( "Steam Button" " ••• Button " or even volume control ) would cause the game to eventually crash into the "Verifying Installation" Screen.
To prevent crashing when playing with TDP limit enabled, i tried not invoking SteamOS UI after launching the game, not even to change volume. Seemed to help but would need to test for longer play sessions.

Worth mentioning;
Just Cause 3 is not a flawless experience on Steam Deck. It micro-stutters during intense action on SteamOS 3.5.7 and additionally on SteamOS 3.4.11 i have observed spikes up from a total power draw of ~11.2w to ~18.9w when using Steam Deck in handheld mode.

Perhaps TDP Limit affects the system as well as the game which causes the crash.

I'll update as i keep playing more.

Its one possible cause out of many. Ive seen many more different circumstances linked to it. I can tell you that a valve employee has triaged the crashes as an amdgpu driver crash which is bringing down the compositor (gamescope) and the steam client too. But they dont seem to know why. Its affecting oled decks as well as lcd, so almost certainly its a software problem.

Possibly possibly... it's quite a shame too because the new driver update did bring a ton of improvements to game performance and stability. Well hopefully whatever i and everyone else discover will, at the very least, contribute to their pursuit and elimination of the cause.

Recently, after one of the latest SteamOS updates, Just Cause 3 began to crash into Verifying Installation whenever the framerate limiter is enabled to 30fps through the Quick Access Menu (...).

If is set the framerate limit to 30fps(60hz) the game will inevitably crash after less than 20 minutes of playtime. Sometimes in less than 5 minutes.
If i set the framerate limit to 60fps(60hz) the game runs without any issues.
I have tried using:
Proton 7.0-6
Proton 8.0-5
Proton 9.0-1
Proton Experimental
Made no difference to prevent crashing.

I have tried Hard Rebooting and Memory Retrain Bootup.

I have the full suite of crash report sharing enabled.

After some recent updates to Steam Client, Just Cause 3 crashes less frequently.
I can play for roughly 1 hour or just a bit over 1 hour and 30 minutes before the game crashes into Verifying Installation.

Steam Version: 1716584667

It is not fixed but the situation has improved.
After playing the game for hours and hours i can now confidently say that the crashing issue has been resolved.
As of Steam Client version 1719259903 running on Stable SteamOS 3.5.19 (OS Build 20240422.1) Proton 9.0-2

I will update the post to reflect this.

It is worth mentioning that my Steam Deck had a visit to Valve’s repair center which meant that i had to Factory reset the device. That could have also contributed to the resolution of the issue.

In case this was in fact Valve Developer’s response to all crash reports and documentation, thank you very much!

Additionally, the game runs better than ever.

Hello, I am glad you got your issue sorted!

I wanted to add a note here in case anyone else if facing issues. I have the same problem with multiple games (E.g. Dave the Diver, Disco Elysium) that have no problem on my PC crashing and going to a "Verifying installation" screen.

My Steam Deck is up-to-date, and running on the same versions: Steam Client version 1719259903 running on Stable SteamOS 3.5.19. I have completed a factory reset and still have the same issue.

I have raised a ticket, hopefully it gets resolved soon!
