Steam Deck not detecting USB drives?
Got the new OLED Steam Deck and have found it does not detect any of the 3 USB drives I've tried. I'm using a USB -> USB C adapter and have tried 3 separate adapters as well.

The USB drives work fine when plugged into my desktop.

Are there specific USB drives that I need for the Steam Deck or is there some other issue going on?

Thanks!

Try booting it into UEFI/BIOS by shutting it down, then Press and Hold the Volume+ button and then press the power button.

In UEFI locate the settings for the USB mode and change it from DRD to xHCI, save changes and then reboot the Steam Deck and check your USB drives.

Worked like a charm, thanks!

Glad it's working for you guys. Also, just for posterities sake, Dual Role Devices (DRD) is a USB specification which is intended to allow a USB device to function as either a Host or as a Device; contextually at the application / software layer.

The actual issue you guys are facing is at that application / software layer whereby the USB controller kernel module isn't switching the context properly. Swapping the mode to xHCI in UEFI is just falling back to the USB mode where the Steam Deck is always a "host" and can't function as a "device".

Just wanting to denote this as this being defaulted to DRD mode with the Steam Deck OLED would seem to suggest that Valve may be intending/working on making the Steam Deck be able to function as a USB controller (e.g. like a Steam Controller) when connected to a PC; rather than the current method which is to use Remote Play. So just keep this in mind in the future if that is something you'd care about and Valve actually implements this properly in the future.

Defaulted in Steam 3.5. DRD never work and they intended to enable it on default.

This worked, thanks.
Thank you! Fixed my issue. Didn’t realize it was my oled deck until I tried to plug in the drive into an lcd deck 😅

I just wanted to note here that on my older LCD deck, this helped when I was having difficulty with USB peripherals in desktop mode.

Are you sure its not the kvm hub?

KVM are pretty complicated devices. Good ones cost multiple hundreds of dollars.

Thank you, I was trying to connect my Steam deck in Desktop mode, with the Nintendo Switch MTP server by USB cable and I couldn't see the DBI content, I actually had the opposite, I had xHCI and change it to DRD, and now it works, I can backup my files and cadtridges directly, without having to use my Windows machine as middle man, now I saved hours of waiting

I believe the correct steps are to switch to DRD and back to xHCI because the automatic switch to xHCI didn't work properly, you need to toggle it for it to work properly.
Hi guys, I just got mine and both mouse and kb aren't working, I tried changing the usb thing in the Bios but it didn't work, is there any other thing I can try?

change it more than once, reboot and test every time. for me it needed 2 tries.
