Is there a way to continue the game after finishing the prologue ?

so I killed the bandits, I couldn't loot the pistol off one and the others despawned before i could loot them. the game turned to night really quick so i had to stumble through the tutorial in the dark. I chopped down a tree but didnt get anything from it, looked around on the ground but couldnt find any wood in the dark. I found a lantern but using it put out no light.
