Good Stuff
==================
- Dercetto is a great setting for the game, I really did enjoy exploring it and it game me strong Eternal Darkness and RE7 vibes. It's a shame that they didn't make it a little more 'funhouse' like with secret passages etc. The dreamland environs are also really great looking and atmospheric but they're just too small with one of them being a proverbial straight line.

- The soundtrack is very authentic, if not poorly paced. The Jazzy tracks for the cast is very fitting but they have the habit of coming on at very weird times. Like right after spitting in Cthulhu's eye probably isn't the best time for an upbeat mardi gras style song.

- I know it's a collect-a-thon but I did like the Lanappe and finding them throughout the environs. The first set you unlock gets you a powerful gun so I was hoping each would give you something neat but 90% of them are just dumb text blurbs, I mean at least give us some upgrades or something.

- I know Embracer group will never read this but how on God's green earth do you greedy slimebags get off charging $60 for this game?! I could name a handful of indie survival horrors with more love and attention to detail in the first 30 minutes then this title has in its entire run time. I guess it doesn't matter since you shuttered the studio immediately after the release of this game but you are the sickness killing gaming

- The story is truly awful, when looking at an A and B scenario like Resident Evil 2, you can at least say with certainty that while you don't have all the answers after playing a single scenario, that you were compelled to at least try the other. No such drive here, the story barely has time to breathe jumping from one dull and predictable moment to the next which is a shame because I actually liked most of the characters, but everything's is so rushed and jumbled. Why did anything even happen in this story? Who knows or cares?

- The combat, at least on hard, is completely terrible. Enemies are bullet and melee sponges and react to your attacks like a brick wall. They also make no sense damage wise as the early enemies take around 5-6 bullets to kill but these small crawler enemies in the end game take 7 or more.

- There is a stealth mechanic that teeters between 'completely useless' with you being spotted immediately or 'super broken' walking in front of idling enemies without them even reacting.

- The enemy variety is not great. There are roughly 4 humanoid and 2 bug enemies that all move and attack in bear identical fashion. Also having them completely in plain sight near constantly kind of removes any feeling of fear or dread.

- The bosses, again on the hard difficulty, seem near unbeatable. I was throwing bricks at the final boss after running out of bullets early. They have obvious weak points but attacking them doesn't seem to do a whole lot more then attacking them normally.

-There are just a ton of janky bugs in this game, enemies will sort of slip and slide around while trying to find you, sometimes melee attacks will clip you into walls or, when running from something, you'll run on top of an invisible obstacle and get stuck until the physics engine pushes you off.

- This one is particularly brutal : The character movement. You character is painfully slow making exploring the various environs a chore, even worse when trying to evade enemies.

Game looks pretty good, both graphics and design, and the sounds and music are very well done as well, but that's it. Way too many problems bring this down to no recommendation level as far as horror is concerned.

The story's not very interesting. The way it's told, the premise and the setting somewhat are, but it's really just your standard Lovecraft plot, to keep it spoilerfree. There's a bunch of characters that get introduced and seem interesting at first, but then you barely ever meet them and they end up being mostly irrelevant. It's also kind of sad they apparently blew a lot of budget on two Hollywood actors for the protagonists and then don't give them much to work with. For instance, at no point during the game do they give the impression they think they are in danger or at least somewhat scared. Mild surprise from time to time is the height of emotional reaction you'll see.

Which brings us to the main problem with this game: it's simply not scary. It's not missing it by much, because the game is moody and well presented, but it's still missing the mark. Big issue for me was that during your exploration of the mansion, you're never really in danger and you know it. Sure, there are one or two instances in which realities overlap for a short moment, but it's not enough to make you feel unsafe. What the game does instead is that you get teleported to rather linear combat levels somewhere else at fixed moments in the story, but unfortunately, the combat is so poorly done that it's more annoying than intimmidating. What little horror the game manages to build up flies out of the window the moment you need to lift your weapon against a monster for the first time. Those looking rather goofy, doesn't help much, either.

The other main aspect of the gameplay are the puzzles. While the puzzle density is adequate, the puzzles themselves never go beyond the type of generic videogame puzzles you've solved a ton of before. In addition to that, the protagonists tell you how to solve them without asking or warning, even with puzzle help turned off in the options.

So overall, this game is one missed opportunity after another. It has it's heart in the right place, but never lives up to its potential. You could have an entertaining time with it regardless and enjoy the atmosphere, but the actual game is mediocre at best and especially as a horror game, it is a failure.
