Struggling with Morgott, please help!
Edit 2: I finally beat him! A little bit of respeccing and just not being bad finally got me past him. Now onward to the Fire giant and Miqulla's Halig tree!

EDIT: I probably should have added this from the start. Current RL 87 URL is my current stat spread and gear setup. Yes, the Knights armor is deliberate. I am trying to limit myself on what type of gear I am allowed to bring as a challange

First off, I am trying to do this fight without spirit ashes, second, I am currently a predominantly strength build using a heater shield +13 and long sword +19 as my chosen weapon

So I've got a basic understanding of most of his move set, but my problem is I keep taking chip damage from a number of his moves.

One of my most problematic attacks occurs in phase 1, where he will summon his spectral hammer and proceed to whirlwind around. I always seem to get knicked by this attack just as he starts spinning. Not enough to send me flying, but enough to take a decent dent in my HP. I usually try to dodge by rolling g to the right, would it be better to roll backwards to try and avoid this attack?

The second attack I keep getting taps from is when he summons what appears to be a spectral dagger that he slashes 2-3 times and usually follows it up with a sweeping attack with his sword.

Is there a certain distance that you want to keep away from him to try and limit him from using this attack?

The same applies to when he summons his spectral sword and starts whirlwinding with them and ends that combo by jumping in the air and performing a slamming stab with both weapons.

I usually can dodge the final attack pretty easily by rolling to the side, but the first few attacks also tend to get chip damage in on me. Is there typically a move or tell he has to let me know when he might do this particular move so I can preemptively roll away before I take that chip damage?

Did you upgrade your flask as much as you can before this fight? Try two handing that sword, unless you using that shield to parry and stagger him idk what it's doing for you.

I can help although Morgott is a very satisfying boss to fight solo. Still need?

Playing at medium range is very safe vs morgott. You can avoid a lot of what he does simply by playing at medium range
The thing about morgott is that he is mostly unpunishable on everything he does unless you're using a fast weapon. You can get good punishes after he does his big twirl weapon combo then jumps into the air and slams the ground, and also in phase 2, you can hard punish his grab, and you can hard punish his double blood slash. Since you have a fast weapon you can get more little punishes, you can get a single rolling r1 punish on a few of his standard slashing moves
Thats a lot of letters.....i can go there and crump him for you, OP.
Use Margit's Shackle in first phase and use this opportunity to inflict frost, rot or poison.
Chilling Mist Ash of War is great way to inflict frost.

It is generally safest to stay close to him, roll to his sides.
He does not have much health. Ranged combat options are useful against him.

I appreciate the offer, however I want to learn how to defeat him on my own, hence why I'm asking for advice about dodging his move sets etc.

Yes, I believe I'm at upgrade 8 or 9 with a total of 13 flasks available.

Is frostbite a permanent affliction on them, or is it something that wears off over time after you apply it once?

can you be summoned for this boss if you already killed Maliketh?

Sorry, I don't want to summon anyone or anything, I want to defeat him solo. Ideally with as few "gimmicks" as possible (So not using shackles and such). It's a personal challenge to try and get good enough at the game to defeat every boss without having to use things like that.

Blessings and spells are fine, but just not things that allows me to near outright cheese the boss I guess is the rule I'm going for.

What you have killed doesnt matter whatsoever. The only things that matter are level and weapon upgrades. If you are in the same bracket it doesnt matter if you havent killed anything or finished the game.

What are your stats, with a +19 weapon you should be demolishing him. Im guessing your build is terrible.

Hmm, I don't think I've unlocked that AoW just yet (Double slash) will have to try and search for it. Right now I've just been using Square off the entire time and using the light attack when the opportunity arises or trying to parry what few attacks I've managed to memorize the timing.

I don't think you understand what I am asking here, I'd explain but I don't wanna spoil OP

That is very possible, I'll see if I can grab a screenshot. I'm not really following any guides really for my "build" but I do have at least one larval tear that I can use to respec if necessary.
