Split Screen and Co-op How To

I feel like it's a simple fix or I am missing it, but starting Solo or Play with friends, how do you get split screen to start, either 2p or 1p? Do I have to have a controller to plug in to start 2p?

2p does not work very good. Lots of bugs to split screen.

split screen worked fine for me until a week or two ago. now we can't spawn p2 at all

My family plays "Play Online Beta > Host (Friends Only)" with two player and split screen. We are playing on PC with two Xbox controllers plugged in. To spawn in the second player...after the first player spawns, the second player presses the small round button next to the left analog stick (button icon is two small squares slightly overlapped) and then gets spawned into the game with split screen.
Frustrating that when one player wants to open the map in split screen mode, it forces both players to stop playing because it opens on the map across the entire screen. Would be nice for each player to open and close the map in their own window.

I have no problems with split-screen. We play on computer through Steam.
- Player 1 makes a game. In the top right corner it says "Press A to join"
- press A on a second controller and choose your character.
And that's it!
