However, the game also doesn't demand optimal play at any point, so you can play around with those toys if you're having fun. You can't force me to stop fielding Cyan! I don't care how many calculations you show me!
Considering the only thing you gain on level up is hp and mp (and maybe some small stats based on the equipt magicite when you level), you can entirely ignore almost every aspect of this game and still beat it with little to no difficulty, because much of this game is an exploration of world building. Gau, while having a short burst of story significance early in WOB (Mog, too), has no other part in the story so is basically an optional character after your first encounter (shadow, umaru, and gogo are entirely optional). I'd say most characters are optional in fact, aside from terra, celes, edgar, sabin, and locke.
Everything else, finding magicite past what the story gives you, ultimate weapons and armor, 70% of the magic (all you need is the teir 1 and 2 elements and heals, and if you want to get fancy, maybe some time stuff), any skills for Gau or Strago, most tools for edgar, 95% of the relics, 99.985% of the items, like 80% of the WOR bosses, and by my calculations, 9/14 of the cast of characters are entirely useless clutter.
And yet for some reason this will probably be my 30th or 40th time doing a 100% run....
