This FF6 vs. FF6 "Old ver."
Hello,

I have both versions, can someone please list pros/cons for each version? Or maybe a TLDR which version to play?

Thanks.

I played this game in this version and I didn't like it. As for why, there are too many characters and playing with all of them makes you feel like their stories are reduced and cut. I don't know how it is in the old version but something is missing in this game. The music has been renewed and the worst renovation in 6 Pixel games seems to be in this game. I have very positive comments on the other 5 games on Steam. They have been renewed in every way, especially the music is great. But this game seems to have been rushed so that we finish a job and don't be late for home tonight.

Reduced and cut? What's cut? There are not more characters here either, what are you talking about? And you didn't play the old version? lol get out
This version doesn't have the Dragon Den dungeon and lacks characters portraits (they can be modded back tho)

As for the pros, it does justice to the "pixel remaster" name, there's some QOL like saving anywhere, the Remastered soundtrack is great and the Opera Scene is now fully voiced.

The PR version has an auto battle function and the Blitz system is better.

The original version feels like a 2025 port, graphic wise. Which is what i would expect from a port, not just some emulator rip to PC.

The original "had" a better modding scene, but it was made for mobile devices and was shoddily ported to PC.

*emphasized had, I haven't looked at the modding scene recently. Last I checked there have been no gameplay mods, only text, UI, and sprite re-works.

I have played all versions and even without the extra dungeon from GB ADV, this verion is the one i would suggest to play. In the countless reworks of the game they fixed multible bugs and made the game more comfortable.

The one and only thing i dont like is the differnet translation, wich comes with some censoreship. But its really not that of a big deal, even less if you didnt play the original one. Its more of an nostalgic thing for me.

There are dozens of pages that show the changes and differences between the versions if you use a simple tool called "google" .. consider trying it.

This one's easily the best version of the game, especially after you apply a couple mods. The older PC release was widely known as the worst one.

The Pixel Remaster is the best version of this game out of the ones I've tried (SNES, PSX and GBA). The soundtrack alone is enough to sell it, but the QoL features and updated art/sprites are mostly welcome (I still prefer the original Kefka sprite to the new one).

No GBA bonus content, but I'm of the opinion this game didn't need it to begin with.

T-edition will always be my answer on what the definitive version of ff6 is.

Otherway around with mods. This version has less mod support.

Neither have modded bonus bosses/dungeons added on tho...

The PC port of the mobile game heavily modded is the best imo, the mods make the game look and sound amazing beyond any other version except for the spell effects, PR wins in that regard. I like the GBA content it gives you something worth leveling/stat boosting your party for and you can finally have both the Ragnarok Esper and sword (As long as you choose Esper of course). It also has most of the important bug fixes carried over from the GBA version. However it isn't without flaws and you still have to deal with clunky ui and zoomed in picture.

Otherwise the Pixel Remaster is the best if you don't care about the GBA content and don't want to fool around with mods. I like that it has item count on the map so in theory you shouldn't miss anything, unless you open certain chests sooner than later and miss out on the better version of the item, both versions still have missables though in the form of monster encounters/rare steals/dances/rages/lores/items/characters/etc.

I have a few gripes with the pixel remaster I just bought it. I also have the mobile version. The pixel remaster has some QOL changes that are welcome but I hear it's missing content. Also the menu system in the mobile version was just better and it showed you the Esper sprites in the menu which just looked cooler. It's sad. This version plays the best but it's just missing some of the cool things from the mobile/GBA versions of the game.

First of all, it's not "missing" anything. I know it sounds pedantic, "missing" vs "bonus" but what you have to understand is that these games aren't INTENDED to be "ultimate editions."

They're literally NOT supposed to be "THE BEST EVARRRRRRRRR"

It's LITERALLY not the intent they had.

All they wanted to do was establish a BASELINE experience. That's it. That's why there's no "bonus" this or "revision" that. BASE LINE experience.

Now, with that said. There are versions of this game that have bonus dungeons or different translations or what not. If that stuff matters to you, then refund this game and go get/play the ones that have those contents.

Like you say the Pixel Remaster has nice QOL changes going for it over the others, item count and store locations on the map, the boost options for adjusting exp/ap/gil rates as well as turning off encounters, I think it has unequipping items and espers from party members that left. I still think it is worth owning.

It is a shame we will probably never have an all in one definitive or ultimate edition but maybe down the road we will have a full blown remake.
