Your decisions have a surprising amount of impact on how the story plays out

There are few games out there that I think would benefit from being longer, and Grimm's Hollow is one of them. It's not so much that the story isn't paced well, but rather the impact and lingering emotions from the ending would hit so much better if we spent more time with each character. Do i think it needs 10+ hours on it? Not really, I think it just needed one more dungeon to really get everything going well enough. For what we got though? It's a very tight fit for an rpg, but one that absolutely nails the format just enough to feel refreshing and interesting through out. If anything you don't really get to play with your tools enough because of it's length which honestly feels like it's biggest problem currently. The small cast of characters is likeable, the story is relatable, and most of all it's just a fun game to play through with a lot of charm.

Grimm's Hollow is a game that can be judged by it's cover, and that's mostly a good thing because it looks really cute and playful.

grimm's hollow is yet another "quirky, earthbound inspired rpg". good news is, those are often the best kinds of games. the main things i really loved about this game were the graphics and story. all the textbox sprites were really well made, colors are used well to convey mood, and it's an overall charming look. the story has (as far as i know) 2 endings. i think the "bad" ending could've been more expanded upon, but for the most part i enjoyed the endings. throughout the whole game though, the story is far from one where you have to think about things in depth, or ask around. it's not necessarily a good or bad thing, but if you're looking for a game like earthbound where you have to take time to figure out your next move, this isn't it. as you can see from my time playing, it's a very short game. i think that works in its favor though, and it helps it come off as a small charming game. onto what i didn't like: the time mechanic in combat. it's difficult to fully explain the issues with it, but play the game for yourself, and you'll see what i mean. it has this feeling of rushing you to make decisions, which isn't great in a turn based game. also, sometimes the dodging sequence is hidden behind another menu, but i think it's unfair to hold that against them, as i'm sure it's a bug. if you can look past this (which trust me, you can,) i would definitely recommend playing the game, after all, it's free!
