Struggling with annoying bugs, I managed to finish the game. Despite that, I still love it like the original over 20 years ago.

Long version
While the game of Commandos 2 is absolutely great and probably the single best entry in the Commandos franchise, this HD remake is a bit questionable in value to say the least.
Starting off with the meat and potatoes - the "HD remake" side of things. The pre-rendered backgrounds are sharper than the originals, but honestly kind of seem to be just AI upscaled. Or maybe they were re-rendered from the original files, but those models were never meant to be shown in such detail. Not sure, it kind of works, but has a sort of uncanny feeling to it. Lacks soul might be a good way to put it. And the masks are all kinds of messed up, so people pop out from behind parts they shouldn't.
Now for the models - the character models are nothing special, but they work. The character heads range from ok to absolutely uncanny and horrible. Thief looks like he's tweaking on meth or something.
My main issue, however, is with the item models. For some stuff the models have just been slightly upscaled, but for others they have been replaced with models that look like from an actual unity asset flip game. In the year of our lord 2019 you would think designers have access to reference photos to work off of and create a few simple models, but nah... I mean just taking the needed models from an asset store would have probably worked better than whatever they did.
So for a remaster that ONLY remastered the graphics, this has been a horrible start. But how about the general feel and gameplay of the game itself?
Well one of the first things you will notice is the censorship. Instead of creeping through German bases and imperial Japanese strongholds, you now have "European location with red bedsheets hanging on the walls" and "ambiguously Asian locale with a lot of white hanging sheets". All the more confusing when the Burma mission still clearly has the imperial Japanese flags on the tyrant's car. It's so dumb to just censor this when it absolutely removes the menacing atmosphere of the original game.
As for the gameplay I swear the original Commandos 2 was a lot better to play. There are no quality of life improvements at all and stuff that worked in the original is now broken a lot of the time. I did not encounter any game breaking bugs, but I did get my soldiers killed due to unresponsive controls, hotkeys not working and broken pathfinding. Also a lot of the animations were busted and many of the sounds were either censored or missing (it's kinda unclear).

All in all having been a Commandos player ever since Beyond the Call of Duty came out, I'm glad I checked it out, but for anyone wanting to experience Commandos 2 - just play the original with a widescreen patch.
