Also, the Japanese versions don't count towards achievements, if that's important to you. I've just now learned this the hard way.

Yes, the music is better on jp versions from nes games, even the JP Castlevania IV has the whip/chains sounds that US version doesn't, but you don't unlock the achievements playing them that is sad. It would work for both versions.
