I saved the game while standing on my large raft. When I logged back in, I couldn't move the raft with ijkl until I hopped into the water and then got back on the raft. Lamps placed on buildings give light to the area. But torches held by hand (the ones you build yourself) and the standing torches give practically no light to the surrounding area.
