NSN LIONS DEN

After the Wolf Den (archive link below) began construction, the NSN immediately started designing a ship like the Wolf Den, but much larger, and it was named the 'Lions Den'. The Lions Den was to be everything the Wolf Den was, but bigger and badder. It was twice the size, sporting an immense forward hangar deck, and high towered command decks, making the ship a complete command and control flagship. Construction of the Lions Den main fuselage and and frame began even while the ship was still under design. Huge sections of the fuselage were assembled, and engine pods, built off site, were attached to the hull. While the craft sported a temporary control and engineering compartment, power was directed towards the front of the vessel to test the large, forward facing cannons.

The Lions Den was well under construction, and slated to be finished construction two years after the Wolf Den is scheduled to finish its combat trials.

However this realty shattered when the Wolf Den was destroyed on its first combat operation. More importantly, the NSN's 'Navy' had been exposed as a collection of outdated, outclassed, and out piloted junk ships. The NSNs entire war strategy was destroyed. The Syndicate, now suffering a crippling financial and military loss, faced the very real idea of having their territories overrun by an aggressive adversary. They needed to develop a new combat doctrine, one that worked and one they could implement immediately. Their first decision turned out to be a very good one. They Fired AI (designer of the Wolf Den, and the project to supply the strike craft that proved to be so useless at the battle of Ludd Station). The NSA then hired the Xerxes Corporation, a company known for sporting event and private sector luxury craft, to develop a unique new line of ships. Xerxes delivered the IronHawk Fighter/Bomber, The Tiburon Gunship, the DevilRay Strike Drone, and the Discordia Class Assault Carrier (archive information below).

All of this, of course, meant that construction of the Lions Den, essentially a bigger, slower, and more expensive failure just waiting to happen, would stop immediately. The project was halted and the construction site disassembled and moved. The ship remained in orbit, sometimes being cannibalized for small scraps,but mostly intact, and still owned by AI.

10 years later, the Lions Den was given a new lease on life. After a decade working the private sector, AI built a new construction site around the old Lions Den fuselage, and began construction of a new ship. The end result was the Mastodon (archive link below), an 'all or nothing' attempt by AI to either regain military contracts with the NSN, or take the massive warship to the federation and defect.

The Ship was bought outright by the Syndicate during the bidding phase for its new command ship, and was commissioned the NSN Mastodon. It is currently in combat trials along with the newly completed NSN Camalla near the Ludd station.
