"Hyperion" - Pioneer Flagship

Description
The Hyperion was built in 2045, during the later stages of the second space race, when the question "who got there first" was replaced by "who built the first permanent outpost there".
Consequently, the Hyperion mission was to find suitable asteroids, establish a permanent, autonomous base on it and to transport the bases inital crew members.
Unlike modern construction ships the Hyperion doesn't feature huge welder arrays, instead it relied on remote controlled construction drones and manual labor by its large crew.

By the standards of 2045 the Hyperion was considered to be a true behemoth of space, the pride of a spacefaring nation. Despite its peaceful mission it was registered as warship, manned by a military crew.
This was mostly a national-pride based decision however, as warfare in space was at that time considered as a mere possibility.
The Hyperion still does feature a few weapons, which were upgraded to modern standards in 2067.

The Hyperion was decommissioned and sold in 2072 to "Parkers shippings", a small shipping company. It now serves as a mere cargo ship, sometimes also accepting passengers.

Crew quarters

The Hyperion was designed for a rather large crew by modern standards. There are enough beds for 21 persons, although the life support could sustain up to 50 persons when required. Similar to modern warships, there was relatively little personal space for the crew members. Only the captain and his first and second officer owned their own little cabin.
The upper crew deck and its 5 beds were reserved for higher ranking officers. Lower ranking crew members had to settle with the least desirable sleeping places in the middle deck.

Today, the Hyperion is run by only 3 crew members, thanks to upgrades to its AI systems and the fact that neither the science lab nor the drones are necessary for performing mere cargo runs.

Cyro Room

A considerable part of the Hyperion is dedicated to its cryo room, holding the initial crews of the planned outposts, as well as any crew member that is not necessary to operate the ship during its long voyages - for example the science team and construction workers.

Recreation zone

Since voyages at that time were long and a big crew was required to operate the ship, the Hyperion had to offer a rather large recreation zone for the crews mental well being.
The recreation zone included a small kitchen, a mess hall and tv room and for some strange reason even a few arcade machines that were considered antiquated even at that time.

Drones

The Hyperion once featured a full assortment of remotly controlled construction- and mining drones. During flight they were kept in place via exterior magnetic landing gears.
Today, only 2 of the construction drones and none of the drilling drones remain.
The ship also featured a drone repair bay & factory. The repair robot is still fully functional, however the drone bay is now used only as a parking lot for the so called
"captains yacht". The "Yacht" is actually a modern R-Tec "Arrow" fighter, one of the few fighters that can even fit inside the tiny drone bay.

Factory

The Hyperion usually carried enough construction components from earth to build the entire base in one go. Knowing that even the best plans still can go wrong and picking up
more components would require a months-long back to earth, the Hyperion was also equipped with a small factory zone, featuring a few assemblers and recylers.

Engineering bay

The 3 large nuclear reactor are slightly more powerful than their modern counterpart, however they are are way more bulky and require constant surveillance to operate safely.
The original reactors are still in use today, only their software was upgraded to get rid of the "constant surveillance" requirement.

Features

- Light armament included. Don't expect it to win vs. a real warship though.
- Very detailed interior, including life support, crew quarters and a recreation zone
- Thruster damage compatible
- Oxygen
- Full conveyor network
- Uses many awesome mods - for decorations only, no balancing changing mods used.

Here is a collection of mods I frequently use in my creations: http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=321673589

If you like the interior of this ship, here is a Internal Design Guide I wrote, containing some tips how to making the interior of your own large ship or station more interesting.

I will take a look at it and see what I can do. Might take some time only a 50/50 chance of getting it fixed.

Beautiful job on the ship! I'll never be able to make something like this.

The drone bay is not meant to be depressurized, ever.
The drones and even that mini fighter are small enough to fit entirly inside of that giant airlock, between the two large gates.

Provided those mod doors are airtight (haven't tested that yet, but they sure look like they should) there shouldn't be a problem. And even if they turn out to be not airtight, one should be able to easily replace them with 3 stock airtight hangar doors.

Also one problem with Hyperion... the drone bay doesent have an airlock upstairs. So even if I did get the ship pressurized, which I cant cos some mods are bugging out atm) Using drone bay would cause the upper levels to loose oxygen :F

With small ships you only have to connect cargo with the cockpit and then fill cargo with oxygen bottles and that'll work yeah. But Hyperion... its too perfect for half assed... take your time. Know that at least I will happily be (if a little anxiously) waiting.
Brenner  [author] 2 Apr, 2015 @ 2:08pm
Hmm, thats true - pretty much all ships on the workshop lost their "survival ready" status with the new update. Maybe I'll just do a half assed solution for now: provide the unproblematic ships with fully oxygen system, the problematic ones just get a oxygen generator to refill oxygen bottles.

Easy enough for large ships. Refitting small fighter ships though, with their limited space and all?
Well, I suppose we can just store a huge amount of oxygen bottles in the cargo containers of our old ships ...

Looking at the patch looks like oxygen is pretty much mandatory now... alotta ships just became outdated :P But I do see your point

Thx!

I actually do plan to add oxygen to this and some other ships. However, after failing to refit my Revenge Assault Frigate - a much smaller ship than this one - I have decided to postpone this plan for now. Oxygen still seems a bit buggy: I managed to supply the upper deck of the Revenge with oxygen, but for some reason some parts of the lower deck lose air. And the funny part is: the parts of the lower deck that have air and the ones that have none aren't even separated from each other, no doors or anything in between them. Just a sloped corridor.

Windows seem to have some issues too. I'll wait with my refits until oxygen works better.
