How to change character in game

Did you join a game but entered as the character you dislike? In this guide, I will show you how to simply change character during a match. In a few simple steps, you can change character! However, this will not work in Versus Mode, or Scavange Mode.

Console

Skip this section if you already have Console enabled
1) You need to go to settings.
2) Click keyboard/mouse.
3) Click Allow Developer Console
4) Click Enabled
Should look something like this.

Going Idle

Next you need to join any type of game besides singleplayer, versus and scavange. Simply because you can't go idle there.
Note:

You need ATLEAST 1 PLAYER playing with you.

Instructions

First join any game but like I said not versus, scavange, or single player. You join in as your least favorite character and your favorite character is still a bot. This is what you have to do in order to play as your favorite character.

1. Go idle
You can only go idle if there's at least one player playing with you.

2. Open the Developer Console
Use your key button to open the Developer Console. (Defualt is ` aka ~ )

3. Type this command: jointeam 2
Make sure you type it like it says. No caps or extra spaces (only 1 space between jointeam and 2)
You can join a specific character by typing "jointeam 2 zoey" or any character.

well.... what about last man on earth? or solo mod?. how to pick a survivor when use a map console, it will nick or bill will be the default.

why is this so intricate? why can't valve just allow us to press one button and choose a character that isn't being played? how stupid.

I've seen a few people asking how to switch characters while in Single Player.

You'll need to pull up the map via console to enable the cheats.

GUIDE:
1. Developer's console < map mapname < sv_cheats
2. sb_takecontrol (This will automatically assign you to another bot.)
3. sb_takecontrol SurvivorName

This should work for everyone unless they already have the Admin System mod. In that case, just hit F4 to go idle, and then use the radial controller to switch to another bot.
